If it's PvP, then yeah, T5-U at minimum. However, player skill counts for a large part of PvP so I wouldn't be surprised to see the really great PvPers able to decimate folks in T5-U and T6 ships while using a vanilla T5, purely on skill alone.
If it's Elite Queues, I'd say T5 can work, but you might need a lot of expensive gear to keep up and even then you may die a lot, simply due to the ship not gaining more HP as you level and the lack of Ship Mastery. The Ship Trait that T6 ships get can help, but it may not be needed.
If you're just planning on running Normal or even some Advanced queues and story missions, then T5 will do just fine.
There may be instances where you may have trouble, but once you get used to the different challenges and learn the tactics needed to overcome them, you should do okay.
Player skill is the measuring stick at the end of the day though. T5-U and T6 just shore up some holes in some players skill level (or lack of, in my case).
Losing faith in humanity, one person at a time.
Your Defiant should be fine, just get your weapons and gear to Mk14.
*If you don't have a Delta Recruit yet... make one! You don't have to level it up to max during the event, just get it to level 10 or so then you can do it at your leisure. As you level it and do 'delta stuff', that toon and your others will get extra loot and stuff. Not a bad bonus.
However, the ViL Expansion will increase the max level to 65. That means the difficulty will also increase as well; meaning enemies will deal more damage and also be able to soak up more damage. That that point a T5u ship or at least a T5 C-Store ship is likely to be highly recommended. Having said that, I will switch back to using the free T5 ships to see how well they hold up.
Also, I just want to point out that I have not allocated any of the Specialization Points that I have earned which means I am not using any of the Specialization Trees.
As someone above stated, T5U and T6 are by no means required and serve more to just reduce the game skills required to play at "end game"
STO prides itself on being truly F2P, with no real money required to be spent to play. That being said, if Cryptic is going to be giving away a T5(U) and the T5U upgrade for it, I would say that they feel that a T5U is going to be required for the new content for all but the very skilled players.
Whilst the extra stats that T5U and T6's give an advantage, a well built T4 and even basic T5 with MK XIV (and soon MK XV) equipment can do any content. As other's said, F2P will get a free T5U to play with at Lvl 61. Don't resist upgrading your equipment, which some players still refuse to do. This makes a bigger difference than people think.
My f2p account does have some store ships for the fed due to a lot of patience converting dil to zen, klink and rommie use the event freebies. On ps4 it's the same setup with fed having some store ships and the other factions event only. The ones I have gone for are ones that I know I like flying and will actually use, traits are simply not enough of a carrot to get me to buy a ship that will get mothballed.
My LTS klinks still use the kar'fi which doesnt have a t6 variant because it's a ship I like flying and have never felt myself struggle doing content in. And thats despite having quite a wide selection of store ships to choose from.
