As the title states, I downloaded this same size patch last week...why am I downloading it again? Just glad I dont have data limits

It's NOT another 6413MB patch at all. Last week it was a pre-patch. The 6413MB is the total size of the files being patched, not the size of the download, which will ALWAYS be less, and was about 300MB today.

In theory it has already downloaded the patch prior to patch day.

In practice it will be down to dumb luck whether or not the launcher decides you have the patch or not.

No way a 300meg update on the prepatch would take hours to trickle through

My theory is that they do the prepatch as a test to see how fast it should download then on patch day they see exactly houw slow they can make it go

Less then 100MB in 30 minutes, I download full ISO's of gigs in 10 to 15 minutes usually

I tend to swap the game over to on demand patching to get the bulk done and into game quicker.

Downside with that is now they've messed up the timer for the weekly token box you have to get the early weeks done sooner than later if you want a chance at the week 4 one. And as the episode is done on demand you end up sitting looking at a loading screen for a fair while.

Thats interesting...as its an hour after I originally posed this, and Im still downloading.

    Patched: 2507 mb

    Received: 2140 mb

Guess Cryptic failed to mention to my computer it only needed to download 300 mb....

The 300MB is what my computer showed, and you must have either cancelled the pre-patching, or other else.

No. They pre-patch early so everyone isn't downloading the patch at the same time and slowing everyone down to a crawl. Some people refuse to let their computers do this process, then come on to complain at the slow patching speed later!

And just because you can download a full ISO in 10 to 15 mins, doesn't mean that the same should happen on a server that's trying to patch the computers of 1,000's upon 1,000's at the same time. The bandwidth Cryptic is contracted to limits the amount of maximum upload the server is capable of, which is still probably in the Gb/s range. Divide that by the 1,000's and you get why it slows down.

If you prepatch 6 gigs worth then it should not be downloading that 6 gigs again.

Interestingly enough going down the on demand route there was only a 2.something gig download. So I suspect they could have trimmed some fat for thursdays downtime prior to the afk rocket day celebrations.

The full 6GB pre-patch was installed on my 2 desktops and 2 laptops. When I logged into STO yesterday the full 6GB patch was downloaded for all my machines; 24GB in total.

Have you tried installing to a networked drive instead of seperate machines? I know a single machine can run multiple instances of the game so multiple machines off a shared drive should work as well.

Curiously swapping to on demand for me dropped the 6 down to about 3 at most.

Barely any patching for the episode which raises an eyebrow over what they mean by on demand as I'd have expected the episode to be much larger than it was even with the rehashed ground map.

Is AFK rocket day really 2+ gigs worth of content?
