PSA: The Breach mission - sub-power cores

So the Breach event is in full swing but seeing a lot of players just shooting anything that moves during play through which is great and all, apart when everyone gets to the sub-power core room.

The only core you should be shooting at is the one WITHOUT the question mark beside the name tag. Anything else is a fake and unleashes a massive electrical blast. Now it’s not too hazardous to ships but it is a pain in the rear and can slow you up as you get knocked back into red alert status, plus you waste a HE or other heal clearing the DOT.

So please, only shoot the real sub-core and save everyone a headache! ;)

Also, the debuff the explosions give you can be purged with science team.

Thankfully they got rid of the first room with the ship that had feedback pulse shielding, people would keep BFAW-ing themselves to death against that :)

(But now I have no reason to switch to a mostly-torps loadout :( )

We still have Voth cruisers that use the reflective shields...

Someone/thing will almost always shoot the fake cores anyway. Someone has pets, BFAW, rescues the stupid NPC ships or just plain doesn't care.

Better advice: Pack Science Team to clear the lightning effect and play normally instead of going out of your way to futilely try to avoid the inevitable.

Pets will target those questionable cores if they didnt get squished by the relay closing on them regardless of the command setting or if they're being targetted by the player or not.

Someone slaps a grav well on a legit core and next round of the shell game it'll pop a fake core before the relays even pried open.

One thing I learned today is that it's the lightning bolts that kill you when it's closing, and said lightning bolts are equally capable of killing you when it's opening.

I'm usually busy having an argument with the clipping and walls before that room anyway, so it's rarely a problem.

Handling seems to get twitchy in this event.

In the end though, it doesn't really matter. You can complete this mission even with players who just shoot at everything without understanding what it's about. Can't be said of every STF.

Also I fail to see how rescuing the "stupid ships" will make somebody fire at fake cores? They don't happen at the same time, for starters, do they?

Because the ships are stupid and will shoot at the cores, of course.

Yeah largely I find this stripped down version of the stf abit dull, and the fact of the sub-core just starts to not matter much (even the optional ships). Kinda wish they would make the stf have a random set up of rooms that you would need to complete, just to give it abit more variety, like switching between sometimes having the sub-core room or the hanger-bay, and even teh room with the massive cathedral ship in it.

Someone told me something interesting the other day: he said that when his ship gets close to a subpower core, auto-fire causes his ship to automatically fire on it. I'm not sure if other people are experiencing this. If so, I suspect the problem is the "Auto attack" setting in the "Controls" tab. I set mine to "Toggle, target change cancels" a long time ago and haven't thought about it since. I'm not sure which setting causes the ship to automatically fire at the subpower cores, but it's probably "Toggle, never cancel" or "Toggle, non-combat cancels".

    I just don't use auto-fire at all.

I've had auto-fire do that to me before as well.

Yep, auto-fire did it to me last night. I need to remember to turn it off for the breach.

At least I didn't fly into any walls and get stuck. Escorts work much better for this than the Vorgon carrier I was flying for the mastery trait on Saturday. Slooooow turning.

I'm running it in a Sarcophagus, now thats a slow turning ship.

Wish I had one, I'd deliberately keep it on base turn for the lulz. Totally worth the potential AFK penalty.

Soon though, soon. Not by the time the event ends mind you.

Autofire doesn't target things by itself. There is a separate option to auto-target enemies that attack you.

Only if you're a sucky Pilot. I've been doing it in a Vonph. No real issues other than how my allies often kill things before i get to them.

Good point. I should have mentioned that in my previous post. There are other options that may be relevant. The one you mentioned is called "Select attacker if attacked". In addition, there are two other options called "Only attack if target selected" and "Select auto target on attack".

It seems that many people still don't know about these options. You don't need to turn auto-fire off; you just need to configure it to do what you want.

I've given up on people not shooting the fake cores. So many have autofire on they pew pew even if they don't actively target it.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

You are right of course, but on the other hoof it really doesn't matter. If you go for speed you should be able to slot ST1 which you need nowhere else in the whole queue. In fact I will be bold and say a large portion of players don't have to pop a single heal during it at all. Otherwise the three second hazard does nothing of consequence.

I'm getting a knock-off Descent game vibe from this.... find the core blow it up and run for the exit.
