BreakingForce's suggestions, Feb 2018

Hey! I've been playing STO since launch, on and off. STO is pretty great in most respects. I love space combat, I hate ground combat (and wish we'd get a new ground combat engine...maybe from neverwinter? iunno, just a thought), and both of those have been consistent since the beginning. Overall, I enjoy all the new ships and stuffs. Great Job, Devs!

However, I'd like to see STO get even better. Retain it's audience for another 8 years. Even attract more population. With those things in mind, I have a few suggestions I'd like to make for stuff to be changed ingame, listed in no particular order except when they come to mind. I'll keep playing regardless, but I'll be happier (and, I presume, so will others? I hope so!).

1) Lockbox ships: Those of us who open boxes tend to do so because we want a specific ship. I don't have any real issue with the gambling aspect, as I know what I'm getting into (I'm guessing that most of STO's player demographic is not children, and we can make decisions about our money). My issue is with this: when we gamble for a ship, if we win said ship, it should be top tier forever. In most cases, we spend far more on keys than we would just purchasing a c-store ship. Adding a new tier and then making a new version of that ship we already spent so much gambling for, and making us gamble again for the new one if we want it kind of has an "I have altered the deal. Pray I do not alter it further" feeling. I should make it clear that I have no issue with new tiers and new versions of lockbox ships to go with them. My solution? I'm not sure. I understand that this isn't easy to solve in a way that makes everyone happy. I guess my best thought is to maybe give current owners of t5 lockbox ships the option to purchase the new tier 6 ships outright with zen at a discounted rate? Maybe like 2500 zen? That'd be a discount on the standard 3000 zen tier 6 c-store ship price, would still make Cryptic and PWE money for whatever new designs they make (and really, is there much work associated with modifying the graphical model of the tier 5 ship into the t6 variant?), and would mean we don't have to go back to the metaphorical Dabo wheel to spin for the updated version of a ship we already own. Another thought would be to make the t6 ship trait available to current owners of the t5 ship for some zen. Maybe 500? I dunno, just a thought. If lockboxes get regulated, we might have to see some changes anyway...might be a good time to find a way to make them a bit more consumer-friendly? It might be good PR to be ahead of the curve on that.

2) Helmet visibility: I'd like the ability to wear (for example) a Solanae EV suit inside an atmosphere area with my helmet hidden. When I turn on the EV suit function, the helmet reappears. Or emerges from the neck of the suit to enclose the head. Or something. Maybe make it an option to be selected at a tailor, and have it just snap from non-EV function to EV function as it would now.

3) The Ferengi Nagus Marauder: Learning about the circumstances of this made me "wtf" super hard. It was given to some people as a reward for providing "outstanding support" for the game, but no further details. How does Cryptic define "outstanding support?" The list of the charges for zen I've purchased plus my lifetime sub say I've provided "outstanding support" for the game by my definition (and probably by many other people's as well, I'd think). At the very least, tell us what had to be done to earn that ship. I'm not necessarily saying "gimme," it just reminds me a bit of EVE's t2 bpo scandal. There's a need for transparency in these things, otherwise it could be construed as favoritism or nepotism.

4) View Cooldowns: I appreciate being able to see exactly when the cooldown for my next pack of bonus marks is coming up, no complaints there. That said, I'd also like to see a countdown for when my group content is able to be run again. Rather than having to keep my queue window open until the line is not red any longer.

5) Ground Loadouts: I'd like to see ground loadouts, complete with specializations and rep traits, so I can be (for example) Intel/Strategist in my ship, and Temporal Op/Commando when I'm on an away team.

6) Secondary Specs: Speaking of specs and in particular secondaries...it'd be really nice to have some text in the tooltip when you hover over the "Activate Secondary" button or some visual cue that when you have a secondary spec slotted, it only recieves benefit from it's top two tiers of skills. Maybe put blue (or some other color) borders around those top two tiers of skills when a spec is slotted in the secondary?

7) Devices: Get rid of device slots. Let us activate the things directly from our inventories. I see you have that tech now, with the competitive games consumables.

8) Dilithium: Every time I browse my armada's holdings for projects to donate to, I see that everything needs dil. Nobody wants to donate dil in the amounts needed, and I see very little incentive for them to do so. Donating dil to fleet projects has an exchange rate of 1dil=1 fleet mark. Given the inherent value of refined dil; value invested by every fleet store purchase requiring a good chunk of dil, invested by every item-giving reputation project requiring a good chunk of dil, value invested by the mere existence of the dil store that requires a good chunk of dil for everything, value invested by refined dil's inherent ability to buy zen; it should be worth a lot more when donated to fleet projects.

That's really all I can think of for right now. It's late. Maybe more later. Let me know what you guys think about the issues I've mentioned, but keep the thread positive so it doesn't get locked. Or, at a minimum, keep the discussion constructive, civil, and understanding. I think STO is really cool, and would like to keep playing it for years longer, but some QoL improvements would be pretty neato, and some of this stuff just felt...off? wrong? non-optimal? I don't know. o7 good hunting

Hence cutting off future revenue streams? Unlikely, and I would see it as endangering to the game's survival.

my suggestion there was to still charge zen for the ships. so they'd still make money off those of us who already have various lockbox ships, just not as much. perhaps that first sentence of that one was poorly worded. and it'd still be per character, you'd be getting a bound to character one time use box for the zen, not an account unlock. and it'd only be available to characters who have the t5 version of the ship.

Click on the queue, it then shows you how long until you can run it again.

again, i want to see it without having to have my queue window open all the time. why not just give us another small popout window that lists what queues we have on cooldown and how much time is left on them?

this is #1 on my QOL wishlist.

fair enough, but I don't want a huge inventory window open when I'm in a queue. Putting clickable devices in their own seperate toolbar is great. As long as we can add them to that toolbar from inventory, then fine.

My #2 QOL wish is: prepopulated admiralty missions, like doff missions are. Doing admiralty takes far too long (esp when you have a lot of toons, or limited cards)

    1st off: 'sup bro

    In response to your thoughts:
    1) I agree with the lock box ships. having acquired T5 through lockboxes directly or on exchange, it does suck there is no way to upgrade them. Even a 200 lobi upgrade token?
    2) I agree about the helmet. I'm quite fond of my tholian ground set and would love to just have the suit without the helmet during regular ground location
    3) don't even get me started. the marauder was doled out to generally people who hadn't logged on in a while. I had previously been awarded the T6 Exploration Cruiser for being "valued" when I really hadn't logged on for 9 months. My Ferengi alt would pay ridiculous zen/lobi/dilithium/ec/anything to have the nagus marauder (not the the T6 Ferengi even reward is spec'd bad, but you know how I prefer the TV series canon ships)
    4) Cooldows could def use a window available when configuring HUD. Turn it off or on as desired
    5) NOPE. It's ground. Just needs to be burnt. Hate ground. Engine hurts my eyes. Bad flashbacks to 2002 graphics. Nope. don't waste any time here devs....lol
    6) Huh. This would be nice
    7) Also, while we HAVE device slots, what's with the limit? Why only 4 slots on a T6?
    8) It is annoying, and when you check the fleet page it's quite evident in most fleets only a handful of members donate 90%+ of the items needed in general. I recently appreciated the model for the new fleet holding that you aquire the necessary items by running the missions. I would flip your suggestion and have an option for a dilithium conversion at the fleet star base into "Fleet Dilithium" make it up to the fleet leaders, but variable 1 dil in 2 out up to 1 in 10 out for startup fleets. Or maybe tie it to the level of your starbase? so T1 bases you donate 1000 dil and get x10 "fleet dilithium" for projects. T2 is 1 in 5 out. T3 is 1 in 4 out. T3 is 1 in 3 out, etc.

Good to "see" you again brother!

    1) They introduced free upgrade to t5-U as a compromise because they recognized people invested a lot of money/resources into those ships. C-store discount sounds like OK option, although they probably had some kind of profit projections where they realized it would endanger their master key sale.

    3) I think they blamed marketing team for this, it was really a poor way to introduce a brand new ship to the game. They should add it to C-store, I know I would never go for it if it becomes part of the Phoenix box.

    5) Ground loadouts would be nice qol improvement. It is likely I would need specific ground setup for colony world simulation, which requires my character to do certain tasks like crowd control because of the enemy waves. On the other hand, queues/missions/invasion zones could require different gear - antiborg for defera for example, where ability to change doffs and specializations at the same time as equipped items would make things easier.

    8) I agree dilithium should reward more fleet credits. One has to choose between several options - buy zen or spend dil in reputation system/phoenix box/crafting/upgrading/re-engineering/fleet gear/dil store, etc. Because it has so much value, having 1 dil = 1.5 or 2 fc would be a nice improvement.

As one of those who DO fill Dilithium requirements...I am over flowing with the Fleet Credits....it is coming out of my ears!!!

And I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE per unit to fill something that no one else wants to fill.

that's the problem, though. nobody else wants to fill it. make it more rewarding so other people will want to fill it. "zomg, i have too many fc" seems like a good problem to have anyway *shrug*

then, when other fleet members are filling it because it's more rewarding, you have the opportunity to not fill it yourself. start letting your fc ocean drain down a bit.

noted. and i've come to the conclusion that t5-u ships aren't bad. all you're missing on a t5-u ship vs it's t6 counterpart are specialization seating and the trait. and maybe a small amount of hp/resists or something. i dunno. how about this? what if instead of a c-store discount for the t6 ship, what if it's just the skin of the new t6 ship to be put on your existing t5-u?

it really was an awful idea. made customers feel like their contributions to the game are somehow not as worthy as those of some others who've done some unnamed service. also, while sure, maybe the marketing team was to blame for the initial introduction, but why have the rest of them not done anything to correct it? put it in the ferengi lockbox replacing the d'kora. put it in the infinity lockbox. make it a mission reward. idc, just something.

yes. that's what i mean, like the competitive wargames consumables, make them work in a toolbar.

Quickly before this gets closed because of bad NECRO!

    1) Nice idea.
    2) This is probably going to require an extra graphical asset to be created.
    3) I have a different view. The only people Cryptic answer to are it's bosses, not it's players. I understand a few players were upset, but the requirements were nobody's business but Cryptic's. I too am LTS and spent tons and I congratulated those that were lucky enough to get one. Not once was I upset that I didn't, not did I feel that I was owed an explanation. This was not a competition, so the rules and requirements did not need to be public knowledge. THAT is the law. Are your parents obliged to tell the whole world why they are giving you presents at Christmas and what was required to earn them? No. People blew this way out of context because they felt they were entitled to know more than they were entitled to.
    4) You can view CD's in the PvE menu and have been able to for well over a year.
    5) This would be nice, but one step at a time.
    6) I swear it already tells you this and has done since roll-out.
    7) Some things can already do this, but Device slots help keep things out of my inventory space!
    8) I think the reason for the current FC value is because Dil can be bought for Zen.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
