Weapon power wasted?

Hi, quick question: I know that excess weapon power serves as a buffer against drain when firing, but is there a point that this is capped? I have 100% uptime on emergency power to weps mk III which provides +40 weapon power. My weapons are at 125 constantly anyway and my transfer rate is pretty good also at 260% (13.0/sec) I run 7x beams and one torp and never see my weapon power bar less than full. My question is with a decent power transfer rate anyway, could I afford to drop my weapon power to say 80 or lower? I can drop it to 65 while EPTW is up and it still sits at 128. Just don't want to be wasting power that could go elsewhere.

I know the obvious thing to do is to test it myself and I probably will tomorrow when I get chance and parse the results. Just wondered it anyone knew off hand? thanks.

You're better keeping it higher, if you can, due to the EPS overcap. You'll lose less in the long wrong if you can keep it boosted, esp over 120.

Thought there used to be a rule of thumb to overcap beam boats by 3-4x (?) your PTR/sec. Can't recall the exact value and for cannons it was slightly different. With the S13 changes have no idea how to figure out an optimum amount anymore. It's a great question to ask and hope somebody can chime in with a more up to date answer on how much to overcap weapons power in relation to other things such as your PTR.

Excellent question OP. As I understand it, if you run max weapon power at 125 like most builds, that extra +40 from EPW is doing nothing for you, unless you are able to exceed the max subsystem cap. You are still getting the bonus 16% dmg at least. Any gains from power above 125 was nerfed with s. 13, so probably any efforts to get power over that cap would be better spent elsewhere. I have heard that drain resistance is now more important than power transfer, but I would like to hear the rationale behind that. Probably good to have a lot of both at least.

"I can drop it to 65 while EPTW is up and it still sits at 128." You mean the base level is 65 and overcap is 128? I think here is where weapon power cost and power insulators/drain resistance come into play. Just because it's sitting at that level in orbit doesn't mean that's where it is in combat. Watch those levels while you are in battle, putting it at 65 is opening you up to massive failure to capitalize on your weapon potential.
