LOL does anyone remember when Cryptic actually liked the player base and gave ani ships away without grinding for it.
Yes, since it doesn't take much to harken back to the halcyon days of January 19th, 2018 (you wrote that post the very day of a free ship giveaway...)
True they aren't the latest shiny but to ask that be handed out without player input is rather missing the point of an RPG video game. You do things and get rewards, with the amount of effort often scaling to the quality of reward on offer. This builds a sense of value and accompanying motivation, which both spurs and justifies continued playtime.
Ie. it's rather the point of it all and if you'd rather be conjuring ships from the aether and handing them out to your characters without concern for a derived sense of worth, then good news because STO has that covered with the Foundry. Make what you want without grind for your own satisfaction or the entertainment of others.
But if that's too much to ask, then is it worth holding onto a complaint 5 or so years after its host discussion was relevant?
Bipedal mammal and senior Foundry author.
Notable missions: Apex [AEI], Gemini [SSF], Trident [AEI], Evolution's Smile [SSF], Transcendence
Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
I agree completely. I only ever got an Obelisk carrier on a few of my toons on my main acct. And while it's a great ship, it doesn't have the bells and whistles I've been getting with my other event ships I had to 'grind' for.
I'll gladly grind for them too. Even if I don't fly them, they'll make great Admiralty cards.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
Don't those grindless anniversery ships pre-date the "free to play" conversion too so they were never truly free, since you had to subcribe to play. So in a sense we're actually getting more now, as we're getting a better ship without a real life monetary costs.

1st Anniversary didn't even have a ship attached.
2nd Anniversary ships which were the Odyssey and the Bortas flagships required you to play a short mission where you were "test driving" the ship out and were rewarded to you once your were done with the mission. This was after the free to play conversion.
3rd Anniversary required you to play through Temporal Ambassador and rewarded Federation players with a T5 Support Cruiser (the Ambassador) and the Kamarag T5 for Klingon players.
