I'm relatively new to STO, and I'd love to get a Kelvin Constitution, but why are they so damn expensive on the exchange?! Come to think of it, why are all ships so extortionate?! 100,000,000,000 for a Krenim ship?
Plus I saw a winter scarf on sale for 20,000,000 EC!!

That's because it players setting that price. Nothing to do with Cryptic. STO's economy is a 'supply and demand' model. If no-one buys the ship, it'll likely be dropped in price.
But 20mil for a scarf, which players can get quite easily, is crazy!

That means the average cost per ship, before figuring in the value of the other pack or box contents, is $250 in real-world cash.
Does the price make more sense now? Whatever the "damn expensive" exchange cost cost is, if it is like the PC exchange then it is a lot less than $250.
On the PC, the exchange is a good way to get a ship with 100% success instead of gambling. You sell lock box keys or R&D PROMO packs (not regular packs, no one wants them) for credits, then use the credits to get the ship.
That's still expensive, but with lock box keys even opening 250 of them does NOT guarantee you a ship. Each box or pack is its own die roll, and you need to roll the 100 or 250 to get the ship.
