Romulan boff uniform coloring linking....argh!!

Is there any way to get around this? Nearly all my boffs who arent part of the 'first four' have issues with color linking when altering their uniforms and it is impossible to get them to look how I want.

No rhyme or reason to it either - boots linked with belt, shoulders linked with collar, chest linked with *hair* - what gives?
