Question on T5, Ship Upgrades, and Fleet ships

bigananibiganani Member Posts: 29 Arc User
So, I was looking at the Fleet Caitan Atrox Carrier. This is a T5 ship. I would have to do a ship upgrade on this to make it T5U.

If I do this, does any other captain I have get the upgraded Fleet carrier if they buy it? Or do they have to also do a ship upgrade?

If I purchase the normal T5 variant from the CStore, I can upgrade that, and then that is available as upgraded to all other captains on my account (at least as I understand it). Then if I purchased the Fleet variant, I get the upgraded one. Should I first buy the normal one, upgrade that, then purchase the fleet variant?

Sorry. I'm just trying to figure out what I need to do before I purchase anything so I don't cost myself more than I should down the road.

I can't say too much on the upgrades part as I haven't played with ship upgrades much but I would consider buying the normal ship first so that you can get the fleet ship module discounts on the fleet purchases.

Upgrades are on a per ship basis. So each ship will require an upgrade token, even if you've upgraded the same ship on another character.

A purchased CStore ship is available to all characters (faction limitations not withstanding) but again upgrades will be needed per used ship.
Then if I purchased the Fleet variant, I get the upgraded one. Should I first buy the normal one, upgrade that, then purchase the fleet variant?

Buying a CStore ship reduces the cost of the fleet variant, but one has to ask oneself if the cost of a ship you may never use is worth the price of reducing the cost of the fleet variant. If you plan on using the fleet variant on multiple characters buying the regular version could be a good idea, otherwise...

This wasn't my understanding. On prior articles such as quoted below, it says any ship you upgrade if available on all characters. However, that appears to be ships that are available on an account basis. I wasn't sure what fleet ships do. (Below quote is from the Arc announcement on T5 upgrades)

"Q: So, if I pay for an upgrade on a starship, that upgraded starship will be available to all my characters that can fly that ship?
A: Correct!  You only need to pay the upgrade fee once
    ."

My understanding was otherwise, but then again I've only ever upgraded one ship (a T5 MultiMission Vesta that I used right after Delta Rising came out) that didn't have a free upgrade. Next time I log on I will get that ship on an alt Fed I play and verify.

EDIT: From the wiki: "If a player has used a Starship Upgrade Requisition to unlock the T5U upgrade on the C-Store Retrofit version of a ship, this will also apply to a matching T5U Fleet ship at no additional cost." So there *are* upgrades that affect fleet ships, but the wiki only mentions retrofit ships.

I have the 3 ship upgrades from the Delta bundle, and the 3 ship upgrades from the Temporal bundle. I figure some of those will go to the Romulan ships you get from the Legacy of Romulus bundle since those are all T5 or lower ships, but I figure if I want a carrier available to all my Fed crew I want to make it as cheap as possible.

Used upgrade tokens work account wide. Once a ship hits T5u through a token on 1 character all others can then upgrade the ship for free no matter what kind of T5 ship it is.
Though there are some T5 ships that can't be upgraded: ships you buy with dilithium, mirror ships from lockboxes, the ships that cost 200k fleet credits, the obelisk carrier that costs fleet credits and modules and for some reason the T5 ranger temporal battlecruiser from the store.

Once you upgrade the Atrox to T5U, the normal and Fleet versions for all applicable Characters on your Account get the Upgrade for free.

Each Character, however, must purchase a Fleet Upgrade if they wish that version, but it will be T5U (free) Fleet.

My apologies to biganani then for passing on my misunderstandings.

Yes, I can verify that the T5U Unlock is indeed account wide.

I have done it on a Patrol Escort Refit (T5), an Assault Cruiser Refit (T5), and the Romulan Scimitar (T5.)

OP, what you want to do is first buy the C-Strore Variant. Once you have that, purchase the Fleet Version for 1 Fleet Module and apply your Upgrade Token to the Fleet Ship.

From that point on, any of your characters can re-claim the C-Store variant and upgrade it to T5U for free. You will recieve the ship as a standard T5 and have to go to the ship dealer to upgrade it as always. You will be able to click the 'upgrade' button for no charge. That character would still need to purchase their own Fleet Module to get the Fleet Variant and would again, receive the Fleet Variant at T5 Standard. They can then upgrade it to T5U for free.

On the Vesta, something that might be causing confusion is that the Upgrade applies on a per-variant basis (as it does on the few other 3 variant T5s). If you upgrade the Tac version (Aventine), that only unlocks the Tac version to get free upgrades on other characters, Eng and Sci variants won't be Upgrade-able until a Upgrade token is applied to that ship variant.

That's because in the end they're still 3 individual ships. They may be able to share parts in the tailor but each subclass is counted as it's own thing. Same goes for all the package deals.

So those 9-Pack ship Bundles will require 9 Upgrade Tokens. If you buy T5 ships now when they have a 20% off Ship Sale, they will generally come with an Upgrade Token for each ship in the Bundle.

Well, ya learn something new every day! I thought that the upgrades via Fleet Ship Modules were per-ship not account wide!
Of course, I don't really pay much attention to T5 anymore and never bought 2 different toons the same Fleet ship, so it's kinda understandable. ;)
