Right when Cryptic released the Federation Dreadnought Cruiser, which came with a Phaser Spinal Lance, I saw someone fly around in the U.S.S. Lancealot. LOL. Brilliant!
I have a Pakled toon whose name is Rapier Half-Wit. He just wanted to join Starfleet and become a low level maintenance tech on some backwater Starbase away from all the action.
His story is that he is unfathomably dumb. The kind of stupidity that would make other Pakleds wonder why he's not spending his days eating paste and licking windows in a group home. The problem is that he has the most amazing luck. The kind of sheer dumb luck that people would kill to have.
Some examples of his luck include:
1) He aced his Starfleet Academy entrance exams by randomly guessing, getting fast tracked into the officer program, and acing every test they threw at him.
2) He earned an Academy Master Marksman medal by picking up a phaser and accidentally doing a spray and pray, coincidentally hitting every target perfectly.
3) He discovered and defeated a Tal Shiar spy infiltrating the Academy by simply walking into a garden one day .
4) There was a Tamarian at the academy, the first Tamarian. While the Tamarian's method of speech confuses everyone else, to Rapier everything made perfect sense (shamelessly inspired by Rocket Raccoon and Groot). The two became fast friends.
Most people are completely in awe of his genius, wondering how he is capable of masking such a brilliant mind behind such obfuscating stupidity.
The truth is, there's nothing obfuscating about it. He really is that stupid.

2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts. For obvious reasons this would only apply to standard ground weapons.
4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.

I myself usually use names of Transformers, or musicians/bands. Sometimes fictional heroes, such as Joe Colton. Though for a KDF toon, I use names of early 1920s/30s era gangsters.
As for others, I have seen a U.S.S. Ultra Magnus, with a character profile that suggested a G.I. Joe/Transformers head cannon. I also saw a Cygnus that someone gave their toon, and their character profile really impressed me greatly with it's references to the Black Hole.

I do have one toon with a Risian corvette with a red paint job, named the Barchetta. (He started off with the randomly-generated Syrinx in the beginning, so I've tried to stick to a Rush-themed naming convention - his T6 will be the Rocinante.)

I once named the Lukari Science Vessel "Triangulum" after the Triangulum constellation. It's name is Latin for "triangle" and is derived from its three brightest stars in the form of a triangle, and the ship happens to have three lights on each corner. I think it's a much clever name than "Dorito". :P
I have never gone for funny names all of mine are related to the toon. Dejah Thoris burroughs has all Barsoom names, the closest I got to a "gotcha" name was calling my Risian Corvette Harley Earl

As far as funny toon names go pretty good ones are from @mmps1 from TSC with Kim Cardassian, EC Peasy and Dax McDax being my favorite.
