Just a heads-up. It seems Cryptic has been busy with another random wave of generous goodies sent to some players. A friend of mine that hadn't played STO for a few months told me to check my email so I did & I wasn't fortunate this round but my friend was. It seems Cryptic booned some players: a R&D pack & (2) Exp boosters. So check your email &/or your Promotions Tab. Cross your fingers & enjoy.

Yeah, I stopped playing for a couple months and got the same thing about a week ago.

Too bad they never send me any of the ones with free ships.

I continue to take issue with the way Cryptic only rewards players that aren't playing and not players that are loyalty playing the game. The only time they ever sent me anything was when I quit for a while.

I got the TOS BOFFs but never had an email. Academic really, as I won't be using them.

Whatever they're doing it's either random or based on something else. I got a free T6 ship email months ago (not the Ferengi) and I haven't taken more than a few days off at a time in the last 3 years. I also got the TOS holocrew and Leeta emails.

I do spend money but I'm far, far away from being a whale.

Man I got skunked again, I didn't know they passed out holocrews outside of the photo bombing conventions

I'll echo a bunch of the posts above.

Cryptic does not only reward player that aren't playing. Although I don't always play for long periods of time, I rarely miss more than one day without at least logging in and doing R&D and DoFFing on all my toons and yet I have received free ships, holo Leeta, holo TOS crew etc, and just today I received an email telling me I have an XP boost waiting for me when I log in.

While Cryptic, like almost all MMOs does send free stuff to people who haven't played in a long time in an attempt to get them to start playing again as more active players = more money coming in, they also are quite generous in rewarding players who play all the time. I have played other MMOs almost daily in the past and rarely, if ever, gotten anything from them for free, although long after I quit playing I now still get the occasional give away email trying to get me to come back again. I play STO almost daily and they are regularly giving away free stuff.
    LTS and loving it.

I received the TOS Holo crew BOFFs as well awhile back which I really like & appreciate. I didn't get this gift which was a bummer since the exp boost would've helped level my new toon but oh well maybe next time. STO definitely earns some head shaking & finger wagging from time to time but, imo, it's still 1 of the better generous free to play games though I donate $ when there's a sale & I think Cryptic has earned it LOL.

It is definitely by far the most generous F2P model that I've seen. You can get 99.9% (the 0.1% being lifer/sub benefits) of the content just by playing the game. I've yet to see another one that you can reasonably get as much stuff as I have in this game without spending real cash. While I HAVE purchased stuff and had a monthly for some time, it's all stuff I could have just grinded out. Plus this way here you get a sense of accomplishment :) it's more like older RPGs where if you wanted the +10 instadeath sword you had to earn it.

As someone who's gotten the Andromeda freebie, TOS boffs, and the RnD pack/boosters, they must really want me playing the game if it is based on absence - absent on all 3.

What you guys getting upset about people getting freebies are forgetting is you've been getting freebies just playing the game; 2 played-for T6s that someone like me will never get (unlike the Andromeda, which can be bought pretty much any time) never mind all the things I don't know about.

I can understand those that get upset that play regularly & get no "freebie" compared to like you, cbrjwrr. It could be viewed as disproportionate rewarding. I think the Andromeda freebie was before my time. The TOS BOFFs is a bit of a unique gift since they cannot be purchased. A free T6 ship though is substantial & that seems like something Cryptic does maybe once a year so kudos to Cryptic. Now if Cryptic offered something to lure players back that no longer played while also offering players that do play to keep playing that might lessen the supposed sting. There's a careful balance that is needed with such things.

I've been on and off from the game since I started playing about 4-5 months before it went f2p. I was active when I got the Intel Assault Cruiser, TOS Bridge Crew, and the boosters.

Just odd lucks of the draw...(Plus I'd give it all away for the gold Nagus :p)

Nope cause I haven't spent **** in over a year and I got the TOS Holoboffs.

I haven't purchased Zen in a while either and I got them.

But why should Cryptic have to do something no other mmo company does? Seriously why? Everybody else does these "please come back" gifts, they don't have to give the active players anything to "lessen the sting" so why expect Cryptic to?

azrael605, don't state your own assumptions into plain to read words right in front of you. I never said Cryptic should do anything did I? Instead I chose in a response: could & might laying out options. I was trying to explain why if a player does invest into STO & got nothing they might feel that way compared to someone that plays less & gets all the free offerings. If you took the time to read my previous posts I even stated I had received the TOS Holo BOFFs which I really like, but not this free offer. No where did I state I was upset about it. It would've been nice sure, but maybe next time. I totally understand Cryptic doesn't owe me zilch, but if/when STO no longer suits me I wont spend money & I don't owe them anything as well. Nor did I ever state they shouldn't do "please come back" offerings did I, azrael605? Instead I stated the option of along with doing that type of marketing you could offer "we appreciate your business" type offerings too. Maybe like the TOS Holo BOFFs were or some of the other past free items. I even stated earlier, "it's still 1 of the better generous free to play games though I donate $ when there's a sale & I think Cryptic has earned it LOL." Do you even read the posts or just cherry-pick your points to complain about? Do you?

I've been gone for awhile before the summer event started and when I got back I found the holoBOFFs in my promotions tab, plus a few other things that hadn't been there before. Didn't get any RnD packs, but that's okay, I don't craft all the time.

I also got the Archon awhile back in an email promo, so yeah, I got a free ship promo. I even like it for a couple of my captains. My son once got the Guardian Cruiser and he likes it too.

So yeah, sometimes we who aren't absent for long periods get things and we who don't play for long periods (in my son's case it was due to crashing all the time. I think he's fixed that.) I did his Flying Highs for him so he wouldn't miss the carrier since he wanted it.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

I haven't purchased Zen in a while either and I got them.

Those are stated to be for attending a convention; even if I know I didn't, and I'm fairly confident most people who also got them didn't attend either.

They do though - in terms of freebie ships for not playing against freebie ships for playing that I've had, 1 T6 doesn't match up well against 2 T6s, 8 T5s, 4 T4s, 3+1 T3s (I had already bought a ship that got given away, but it still should be counted) and 1 T2.

One giveaway ship alone defines that - the Avenger was a freebie giveaway for the anniversary event earlier this year.

Now given your statement that the Andromeda giveaway was before your time, that probably means you won't understand the significance, so I'll explain why that matters to me. Today, an Avenger is only considered for Admiralty, it's console and Arbiter costume parts; it is obsolete now. But, back in the days of the T5s and Mk 12 gear, the Avenger was indisputably in the top 3 Fed Cruisers for DPS. Some might argue the best Fed Cruiser for DPS.

The Andromeda by comparison, has only slightly rectified the faults of the Galaxy class, and from a game mechanics perspective it was launched already a 2nd rate T6 behind the Guardian that was released with Delta Rising.

I could definitely understand the angst some might feel within that scenario. it reminds me of chat whenever there is a sale, & someone seems to have always just bought hours prior. I actually bought the T6 Cross-Faction Battlecruiser set during the last sale & one of the reasons was that I had received that Avenger for free. It does seem a shame T5 ships are a bit lost in the middle. T6s will probably suffer the same when Cryptic eventually releases T7s. I try to keep things in context. I may or may not get the benefit this time but hopefully next time. If not I tend to speak with my wallet.

I read your whole post, you said & I quote

"Now if Cryptic offered something to lure players back that no longer played while also offering players that do play to keep playing that might lessen the supposed sting. There's a careful balance that is needed with such things."

I responded to this point & nothing else. You stated this & I asked why Cryptic should do something nobody else in the entire industry does. Its that simple.

"But why should Cryptic have to do something no other mmo company does? Seriously why? Everybody else does these "please come back" gifts, they don't have to give the active players anything to "lessen the sting" so why expect Cryptic to?" was your original response.

Again I never stated Cryptic should. I simply offered another option & train of thought. Showing appreciation for current customers can have a positive effect in customer retention after all. & that could be the aim of the very next round of giveaways in the future who knows.

Years ago, I remember reading where Blizzard sent some statue to all it's long term World of Warcraft (WoW) loyal customers. I forget the exact qualifications, but I'm sure it was steep by the looks of the statue in the picture. Blizzard didn't have to do that.

Star Wars The Old Republic (SWTOR), when I used to play it routinely, had offerings from time to time for the free players & the subscribed players. Sometimes they were the same freebie/offer & sometimes they were a bit different.

Just last week Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) had a freebie offer for both free players & subscribed players. If a free player you got a few days of playing as subscribed. If you were a subscribed player then you got so many of something similar to STO's Lock Boxes.

I get your point of view, azrael605, that Cryptic doesn't have to offer anything to active players. Cryptic also doesn't have to offer anything to former players neither. In context it's a balancing act of retaining customers & regaining customers it doesn't have to be a versus.

While we haven't had one in a while, they do their fair share of giveaways, and you could argue summer/winter/anniversary ships are rewards for being loyal players HOWEVER that argument can also be applied to anything you buy with dilzen. I would have LOOOVED holoboffs and especially the Nagus being that the ferengi marauder is one of my favorite ships. The criteria for how these things are given out would be nice to know

Here's hoping I get a second prize in the cruise giveaway anyways - seems to be the only other way to get that tub for now.

See here is the thing, Cryptic does c-store giveaways every year, usually multiple times a year. Thats the equivalent of the stuff you mention from WoW, TOR, ESO right there. So my confusion comes from why anyone would want them to do more than companies with much larger budgets when they are already far more generous & have a much better f2p model (especially better than TOR).

"Cryptic does c-store giveaways every year, usually multiple times a year. Thats the equivalent of the stuff you mention from WoW, TOR, ESO right there." ... There are giveaways where everyone is included & if there are giveaways for only certain players which those are distinct differences & grouping the two together is a false equivalent & it depends on the offerings. However, it helps, I think, to keep things in perspective & context of past, present, & future hence why previously I had stated in this thread:

Just a heads-up. It seems Cryptic has been busy with another random wave of generous goodies sent to some players. A friend of mine that hadn't played STO for a few months told me to check my email so I did & I wasn't fortunate this round but my friend was. "So my confusion comes from why anyone would want them to do more than companies with much larger budgets when they are already far more generous & have a much better f2p model (especially better than TOR)." ... or as you originally stated it:

"But why should Cryptic have to do something no other mmo company does? Seriously why? Everybody else does these "please come back" gifts, they don't have to give the active players anything to "lessen the sting" so why expect Cryptic to?" ... Which is valid, but then again, I don't think anyone was asking that. At this very moment it might seem that way, but maybe the next giveaway will me aimed towards only Lifetimers, or maybe another selected demographic.

I still wonder what harm, if any, would've happened if everyone from previous players to active players would've received this current gift & if no harm then why not include everyone? or if it would've been something considered more valuable? So to quote you, azrael605, "Seriously why?" Maybe they are tax ride-offs? I also wonder if I would be upset or have the maturity if I did, or more likely didn't, receive some T6 ship I had been saving-up for versus another that had not been playing for three, six, or some arbitrary number of months. It should be about retaining players, customers, & regaining players & not a versus. I think an accurate comment I read about this was:
I suspect the criteria might be fluid and change regularly

After all it's a business that needs finances to function. That's why I don't mind at all if Lifetimers got even more perks, I'm not a Lifertimer, &/or regular subscribers, &/or whatever criteria Cryptic sets on purchasing power. That's why I invest $ every once in awhile to Cryptic since I enjoy the game & think it's overall well done if/when that changes then I'll probably stop investing $ easy peasy. But now back to learning more about the 13.5 mid-season.

I got my first email promo recently. The TOS Holoboffs plus HoloLeeta boff. I've never quit playing. So there is no "they only reward people not playing". As for the stuff sent to people not playing, thats an industry standard tactic, every mmo does it.

The only way you can get a TOS holographic bridge crew set was by attending an special event. So I doubt it was Cryptic that hand us those TOS holoboffs. It more likely that someone in our fleets was handing them out to us.
