Not the best mission honestly. Mechanics wise it's pretty standard, and the ground maps are GOR-geous, but the story brings the whole thing down.
Remember that one episode of TNG? Ya know, the one where some scientists are freaking out about how warp drive use was destroying the environment *cough* I mean, 'subspace'? Basically a not-so-subtle 'Save the Planet' episode that everyone groaned over. "Mirrors and Smoke" feels like that; the main statement in the mission is alright and unobjectionable for the most part, but it's delivered in such an cringingly obvious and heavy-handed way that the audience/players can't be persuaded to care. It's one of those moral tales where the moral really didn't need to be said 'cause everyone knows it, so why does it have to be drummed in again ad nauseam every few minutes? Add in the news feeds complete with the 'alternative facts' point of view, and a character clearly lampooning a certain 'huuuge-headed elected official' and his rabid followers, and it's all a bit much. (To be fair, that last part may just be folks like me projecting current events into the game...but I doubt it.)
Overselling the moral of the story causes the mission to fall flat on its face. Then again, there's plenty of Trek episodes that went into this trap as well, so I guess it's in good company.
What are your first impressions of the new Competitive Wargames? Which is your favorite, and what can be improved?
Both seem fine enough. (Twin Tribulations still hasn't come out at this point. ) PvP that's more foot race than gankfest? Sure, I'm down. Kinda think it depends on the kind of team you end up with; with a bad team it can seem like a tiresome slog where teammates are doing their own random things that don't help complete any of the stages until the other team finally beats you. (At least you still get your daily marks though.) With a good team it can be quite nice, using teamwork and skill to get through a PvE-like scenario while ALSO trying to outrun or even mess with the other team. (Side Note: More Borg monster play please!)
I'd give the edge to "Binary Circuit", 'cause all the necessary tasks and team roles are pretty easy to identify as long as you're not spamming F while running into the wall. "Core Assault" could use some better identification of who's carrying the 'charges' in the relay segment, and maybe some quicker explanation overall of the relevant tasks; 'cause if you're new and you sit and read the whole dialogue packet on the queue, the other team's probably on to the 2nd or 3rd stage before you're done.
