Would you pay 500 Zen for an additional Skill Tree?

tribbulatertribbulater Member Posts: 292 Arc User
Poll for creating an extra Skill Tree tab for captains to have more than one selectable set of skills (space/ground, not specialization).

This would allow us to make better use of the wide variety of ships, abilities and gear in the game; rather than having to essentially dedicate each captain to one type of build or to a generic build.

Please select the highest option you would be willing to pay for, as without a monetization incentive there isn't really a compelling reason for Cryptic to work on this. Particularly given past issues with ability tray/trait slots, there's no point doing it if it isn't worth doing right.

I would not pay Zen but would use an in-game unlock (similar to extra Ship trait slot) at a Fleet or other facility

I would not pay Zen or an unlock, this should be a basic free feature for all captains

If it existed, sure I'd pay for an additional skill tree option but I have my grave doubts about whether such a thing would ever be implemented. Alting gets us the same practical effect plus the need to continue consuming all types of resources, which helps bolster the in-game economy. It also encourages us to explore different characters, crews, ships, ect. There's not a whole lot worth complaining about, except the basic fact that we have multiple characters.

I wish there was a check box for which two specializations you want active in space or ground. It's almost the same issue we had before with personal traits.

I requested this when the skill revamp first hit and haven't still changed my opinion. Would be lovely feature to have.

OP are you trying to describe something like how other games allow you to have both a main spec and an off-spec that you can switch between on the fly?

Evil, pretty much, yes. For example, I might have a science captain that I want to run a mostly science/exotic damage build on. But from time to time I might also want that captain to fly a regular beam boat or a tank cruiser or an escort or something.

I get DuncanIdaho11's point that we have alts for that, and alts to some extent boost the amount of consumption/sinks in the game. I simply wouldn't create and level an alt just to try out a torpedo build, or a carrier/pet build, or to have a fast ship for running certain content that speed would benefit.

If I had a second skill tab and could switch to it, quite a few of my captains would run two different types of ship builds at various times. It would also help me in experimenting with different builds while not giving up my 'main' build (something a lot of people currently do on Tribble, which does nothing for the prime economy).

(Edit: it wouldn't be a 'switch on the fly' thing IMO, as in, something you could do in mid-mission or mid-battle. It would be something you select while outside of combat and mission zones, same as making changes to your traits.)

This would be very nice. Right now if you want to optimize you have to consider "is this story episode more space or ground?" and for space vs. ground queues and battle zones you need to remember to switch your primary and secondary back and forth.

Id happily pay the zen, but I would be equally happy if it were a fleet type purchase.

Yes this sounds like a cool idea.

The current system is both restrictive and expensive to change your skills. You have no way to test a skill setup and respecing costs a fair bit when you don;t know the outcome.
Also having access to two skill trees would allow you to have a couple of builds available to you rather than be stuck into a set up until you pay for a change.

But i'd prefer it to be an in game option like the extra trait slots etc. That way it's fairly easy to grind out but would still not be something everyone could buy outright straight away.

Separate ground and spec spec trees would be very nice too.

Would be nice for anyone who likes to use both carriers and non-carriers with the same character, but that's really the only scenario where it's very useful.

    Short answer...NO

Why? I would pay for an extra trait slot but not for a skill tree.

Space and Ground should each have their own primary and secondary specialization slots. That way players need not bother to change their trees when switching between space and ground combat.

Retraining your Captain should be free.

But as it isn't i'd rather they separated Ground and Space and reduced the cost to purchase a retrain token, so if I wanted to tweak 1 or the other I don't have to do a full retrain and reselect all my personal space and ground traits.

    No.

I would much rather just change respecs to cost EC or Dilithium. The thing that truly kills experimentation in builds is the ridiculously high cost of respecs. STO has a great F2P model, but this is one area where they badly miss the mark.

Currently its annoying when you get a free ship or a 'spare' in a discount pack and the captain simply isn't specced to fly it properly, for example the recent free sci ship had most of my captains fawing away in it, no way was I going to respec just to level a ship and then respec back afterward.

no content like this should be locked behind a pay wall no matter how small that pay wall is.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I did build the ship to fit the captain, but 6 beams and 2 tac console slots and limited tac boff abilities made it a drag for four of my six toons.

They should also have the breakup of Active Reputation Traits into Space and Ground like they did with the Personnel Traits. We are now at five for each with the Research Lab Unlock.

They should simply max out all skill trees for everyone by default. This way you can experiment on different builds much better! pig-1.gif

(Serious suggestion: Make respecs free or cost generic in-game currency (EC) like any other hack&slay does it, no real justification in taking premium currency for such a basic feature)

When LOTRO introduced their concept of Skill Trees they gave each Character two 'Loadouts' based upon Class that you could fill and change however and whenever you wanted for nothing. You could switch between them at leisure. You paid their equivalent of Zen for a third 'Loadout' for a Character.

Since I really have not played since I got sucked into STO, I couldn't tell you if they added the capability of more 'Loadouts'.
