I am trying to make it so that the player can fight a ship but end the fight by disabling the enemy ship. So far all space combat seems to end with the ship blowing up.
That is what I did. Players are complaining about the ship blowing up. The combat behavior is set to true combat. True combat says that the npc will fight untill deth or leash. What is leash?
Leash (or release?) means that if the mob is set to vanish once the player completes a certain objective in the mission (turn on a console, reach a waypoint, talk to a contact, etc.), then that mob will disappear once that objective is completed. This is best used when you want to have the player complete an objective that doesn't involve shooting and killing the mob.
As for people complaining about the ship blowing up, there isn't anything you can do about that except for what thay8472 suggested: have a contact that represents the ship in question spawn once the mob that ship is in is destroyed. You can set the animation on that contact to indicate that it has been disabled. I can't remember the exact name of the two animations (FX-Ship Disabled?), but they will either have the ship emitting a plasma leak or energy arcs surrounding the ship indicating that it's been damaged.

Best bet is to have a npc contact of the same ship spawn when said ship's group has been destroyed.
