[ASSET REQUEST] New Inhabited Planet Models + Textures

sirboulevardsirboulevard Member Posts: 722 Arc User
Dear Dev Team,

This is a request for some of the new inhabited planet models and textures that were added in Season 12: Reckoning thanks to the always awesome Tacofangs. And while the new textures have autopropagated to the models we have in the Foundry, its revealed a number of problems.

1) Lack of Variety - Most of the M-class planets we have are repeats of the same model (ie. Planet - Class M 02, 03, 04, and 12 are calling the same texture, meaning that those 4 of the 14 M-class planets are a repeat of the same model).

2) Non-Class M Inhabited Worlds are very limited - We have 2 of the Class Ks, 2 Class Ls (both Borgified), ZERO Class Os, and only 2 Class P planets. And even among those, its hit or miss as to if they're the inhabited versions. Based on this list Taco provided a few months back, we have a very small amount of these worlds. It would be very helpful to gain access to more of these to diversify our planets. And to be clear: I am *NOT* asking for the full list. That would be crazy. But a couple more would be nice.

3) Several major homeworlds were added in season 12, and while using generic textures, are not in the Foundry - These would be planets like Ferasa Prime, Sauria, or so on. It would be helpful for us authors to have those specific textured planets (even if they're generics) in the foundry so we can make missions based on them.

4) Planets with Unique textures are broken or missing - A few like Andor and Andoria are using a depreciated texture for some reason (especially in the premade map) and come out looking not right. A few others have been showing up as pure white since the lighting update. And a few more just aren't in. Based on this list provided by Taco a few months back, I would only request Gornar, Khitomer, Memory Alpha, New Romulus, Vega, and Virinat would be genuinely needed as new assets. The ones on that list, but not in the foundry already and not on my request list are so minor that most people would not care or even think to use them, really, so its not worth asking for.

The ones in the foundry already need some texture TLC since they're giving us some minor headaches.

Thanks for your time, and hopefully we can get some planetary love soon!

    Yes, please!

And where on Tribble are those new planets? Are they actually visitable systems?

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

They... are live. On holodeck. They're part of that sector space size increase.

Pssst, they're already in the Foundry. :)

Pretty much all the rocky terrestrial worlds in the Foundry (except for class D) got updated automatically with S12's across-the-board planetary texture revamp. Sauria I know is in (as planet M 12) but not every new planet may be represented (since we only got texture updates to existing planets in the Foundry, not new assets.) Getting the full set would indeed be swell, but for now we do have the comfort of having the incredible new artwork in the Foundry.

    Couple notes:
    1. New planet textures show up on map, not in the editor preview. So to know what you're really working with you have to test. There are some stylistic changes between old and new planet textures.
    2. There are 9 planets so far identified that have no textures whatsoever. These appear as giant white balls. This is a bug. There's a thread in the Foundry bug reports section detailing it.

Actually there's a few problems. Yes, I know we got automatically updated textures, but that came with them just updating all the models. Which is probably why we have white planets now. But not all are created equal. For instance, that version of Sauria we do have? Its the uninhabited version, meaning no cities (and Sauria's cities are pretty damn obvious). And we still have 4 planets that are literally the exact same model. And some of the better new planet models are missing. So, yes, we still are in need of an art asset update.

Besides, this is like the first time in forever we've needed Space Assets. Especially if we're talking homeworlds, even if they're using a generic texture. And as you pointed out, half aren't working right to begin with, so let's just go for the full upgrade while we're here.

Come to think of it, do any of the new Foundry M class planets have cities? I don't believe any of those I took a look at did. That's something Cryptic might want to consider for a short-term planet update. At the very least (getting everything would be great but we should probably check our expectations against the limited dev time the Foundry gets) updating the planets we have to take better advantage of the new textures available would be greatly appreciated (ie. get the coolest, most versatile textures in first, then work on filling out the complete planet list if that's something Cryptic can indeed work on.)

Worth noting: we seem to have all the uninhabited worlds. All we're lacking is inhabitable-class planets types and a few unique textures.
