While this is or was a fun conversation. Once we seemed to agree that the use of protomatter is basically macro scale replicators. IE turning atoms to different atoms of our choosing. The concept goes off the rails of power and interest is lost.
Let's give an example. You have a mining world. You get all the easy iron, dilithium, etc you want out of the rock. Then you use the world as a garbage dump. Dropping whatever waste you don't want into the mines and over the surface. Now you hit the whole thing with another genesis torpedo and the mines have been restored. Planetary scale recycling. And note this plan does not need the goldilocks zone or a habitable world. Just one in use.
