I retired all of my boff except Elisa and Tovan(cannot delete him). Recurited all purple(very rare) boff and change their appearance so now none of the boff have original appearance. I have 3 tac, 3 sci and 3 eng as i want to have boff than can fit any ship combination. All the boff have all the specialization and skill therefore they can do everything and do not need to be replaced.
I will only remove the boff if there is a new interesting boff that comes out (eg will remove eng boff and replace with new eng) as i prefer not to have too many boff and like to keep them nice and tidy.
I've dismissed officers here and there over time. But I tend to stick with the crews I have on each character as a lot of them I give stories/backstories too.
I will often have an officer that is say uncommon, that I get a very rare replacement for, and just you know copy it over.
But there are some officers I've dismissed, but I RP it as them transferring to another ship in the fleet. Not like mulching them for resources. Heh.
While I promote them to commander level if I'm using them, I set their rank insignia to what it is I feel they are in my crew/head canon. Oftentimes I use the station they're at to reflect the rank (so like if they're placed at the ensign tactical station I set their rank insignia to ensign).
I really like having the new system where I can have my BOFFs learn most skills. My AoY toon has a tiny crew because of that. Just makes life easier. And I've set the 4 crew members I actually use in ground and space (only 4 stations on my Temporal Light Cruiser) to be based on characters from TOS (like my tactical officer is supposed to be Angela Martine, the phaser gun crew member from the episode "Balance of Terror" ... with my head canon being she ended up on my ship before we got bounced to the 25th century because she transferred off the Enterprise after the episode Shore Leave).
So I don't know, I hadn't ever really considered the actions of dismissal too much.
Basically never. My love for STO derives from my love of Star Trek, and as such I've become pretty attached to all of my various crewmen and officers. They're all characters in my personal little Trek series, they all have their own little personalities and quirks and backstories, and I get much more joy and fun out of continuing to let this story be told than I would to push for maximum efficiency. I try to build my captain/ship/crew out enough to be able to clear content without punching myself in the TRIBBLE, but beyond that? It's just not fun for me personally, the opposite in fact when you reach the point where you're just overkilling all enemies the moment you glance at em'. When I want to feel like a god or prove my gaming "skills", there's plenty of other games for that.
With that said, I have dismissed officers before. Either to "upgrade" an officer to Rare or Very Rare (a rare occurrence in itself, given the typical price of higher rarity BOFFs and the meager difference even between a Very Rare and a Common), or because I really need to free up some BOFF space and I just can't bring myself to care about an officer. For example: right now I have an Andorian Science Officer who I care very little for. She brings nothing special to the table: she's not the only Andorian and far from the only woman on the bridge crew, all of her space abilities I can teach to someone else, and she's typically dead last when I'm considering which Science Officers to bring on an away mission. So, unfortunately for her, she's probably due to get "killed off" so the show-runners can bring in someone more compelling.
Had to airlock a few to make room for my second away team. This second team wears MACO uniforms, and is to be used on known (to my character, not me) combat missions. For example, missions like the one where you go to the signing of the Temporal accords I would use my original team, while in missions that involve the Borg I would use my MACO team.
If we could give boffs multiple costumes I wouldn't have had to ditch any of my old ones, but oh well.
Actually, you can give your BOFF several costumes by saving various appearances for them in the tailor. Naturally, you will have to go through the tailor screen each time you want to go on a particular mission, and load the costumes, but that is still a workaround of sorts.
The fact that it requires me to use the tailor between every mission is enough to get me not to do it that way, lol, much easier the way I did it
It's Starfleet, you stay on your assigned ship for up to decades at a time getting promoted at least as high as captain. Transfers are very rare and having a large number of commanders is not unusual.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I only got rid of my Reman featured episode reward because he is not costumizable and I didn't need another sci. All of my BOffs have to be able to change their appearance. (Its kind of a requirement.)
The only ones that I've allowed to stay are Nelex Exil (because Dinosaur...) The Bream tac BOff because I need a tac sometimes. And the Jem'Hadar. Though now that I think about it, I could request Flores and dismiss my Jem BOff because if I ever need/want him again he is a mission reward...
Hey thanks OP, you made me come to a new conclusion!
Dumping the special BOFFs is a huge NO-NO for me. Not only because they cannot be reclaimed easily, but also because i just love their unique appearance. Nevermind if i cannot edit their costume, the Reman / Breen / Jem'hadar / Voth / Hierarchy bridge officers have been part of my crew for years, and there is no way i am ever retiring them.
Same goes for my Nausicaan Head Tactician (i play FED). He's a gem.

I don't get why the poor Reman hasn't been made customizable yet.
Oh well, there's more important stuff for Cryptic to work on. Like making Hirogen a playable race.

YES!!!!!
But they're probably relegated to an enemy-only race. We might get a boff, if anything.

*shrugs* It's super-easy to create a 100% accurate Reman by customizing a regular alien BOFF. Same goes for the Hirogen. Playing as a FED, I have a Reman Tactical BOFF, as well as a Hirogen Engineering BOFF. Easy as cake to customize an alien BOFF accordingly in both cases. All you need to do then is getting the Hirogen armor from the Lobi store as well as one of those shiny tetryon rifles from the Hirogen lockbox.
You are trying to materialize game assets, which is silly.
Everything gets wiped out except for SRO, Krenim, and other valuable boffs. The rest is vendor trash.
It really all depends on the way you perceive an online game...
For some, it's indeed a endless DPS race towards whatever goal they pursue. For some others, like me, it's a way to live an original and personal part of the Star Trek saga, with your own ship and crewmates.
Call me sentimental if you so wish, but i still have to see a single Star Trek episode where Jean-Luc Picard was concerned about DPS over his crew's well-being...
