Perhaps, though to clarify, I was watching the show back then as well. Still, it does seem to fit a pattern of making films which parody their original. Such as the Dukes of Hazzard film, or Starsky & Huch (granted I didn't watch this show but what I've heard has a more serious vibe).
The original starsky and hutch was a good police drama, you might wanna give it a watch but keep an open mind it was the 70s.

Yeah, I wish they would stop doing that TBH. The only one of such movies I actually watched was Land of the Lost, I remember watching the early '90s version of the show when I was a kid so I was somewhat excited when they made the movie, but that thing was just absolute garbage.
