I started to wonder if the snowBorg in Q's Winter Wonderland are actual Borg and they are doing a genuine invasion.
After all, I can just see the Q turning them into snowmen just for a laugh.
And most likely the Borg Hivemind wouldn't care if they'd been physically transformed, the order would be given to attack regardless.

It might even be possible that when Q opens the portals between our realm and Q Continuum, this makes the barriers less resilient due to proximity and the Borg exploit this vulnerability by opening rifts to enter the realm.
In one episode of Voyager, a technological device was constructed that could allow a corporeal starship to enter the Continuum, so it is definitely possible to get there without needing to be a Q.

Also, if I remember DS9 right, Sisko is actually responsible for the Dominion war, so again, better for the Federation.

I think you misremember. The only thing the Dominion needed to be "provoked" by the Federation (or the rest of the Alpha Quadrant) was their mere existence. Any solids not under Dominion control was perceived as a potential and thus unacceptable threat to the Founders.

This is entirely possible, it has been a few years since I watched the relevant episodes so my recollection is vague at best.

Makes me wonder if Q didn't listen to Daddy. :#
After all, the Q we are are dealing with is his son, not the Q from the series.

Maybe he thought, yeah, it's just a stupid rule, I'll go annoy the Borg just to prove nothing will go wrong.
Several years later, the Borg are invading the Continuum!

I think Q2 said that there's some kind of perceptual filter that is employed when corporeal lifeforms visit the Continuum, because if we saw it as it truly is, it would be completely incomprehensible.
Q says something else along the same lines later when he says something like "this isn't a simple flintlock rifle, it's just your mind translating the concept of a Q weapon into something you can understand".

So if the Borg are truly invading, the Q might have created a perceptual filter specifically targeted at Borg to reduce their technological capabilities by turning them into relatively harmless snowBorg.
Or we're the ones affected by the filter, seeing the Borg invasion force as something other then what they are.

That was actually Q Sr. in "Death Wish" (when he brought Janeway to the Continuum and it appeared as an endless dirt road).
