Ornament Fragments - Do I smash my own?

I noticed the holiday prize vendor is taking broken ornament fragments, something that I don't remember seeing before. What or how do I get or create those? Do I break an ornament I have to get fragments or is it one of the events new prizes?

    Personally I really dislike fragments because they take 5x the effort to get a single ornament.

    Seems to be 1 commodity for every 5 fragments turned in. Fun idea, but did the Grinch design that payout?
    This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

    The only way I've gotten any is the Fishing Event as well...seems they are a bit on the "rare" end of things.

    I think you get these for turning over smaller fish in the fishing event. Too small to be worth a regular ornament and all that.

    Yeah, I get them from turning in small fish and I think you sometimes get them with medium fishes as well.

    The number of ornament fragments depends on the number of times the gummy dragon gets killed during the fishing session. If you contributed fish to the bait tank before the first one is killed, then you get the full amount, if you joined after the event started, you get fewer. So far, I've seen up to 5 kills in a single cycle; apparently there weren't enough heavy weapons in those groups to kill the serpent faster... :*

    As for the rewards, the exchange of the fragment is paid out in a single type of holiday token, but I believe it's not 5:1. I need to watch more closely next time to check the exact ratio.

    EDIT: Sure enough, 5 fragments get you one whole holiday favor; which type is up to the RNG. It turns out that the small fish only give an ornament fragment, and the larger fish give whole favors, so this is a way to upgrade your fish rewards. Kinda seems like a lot of work for the payout, IMO.

    Does anyone know if buying the Purple gauntlet improve the size of the fish, of the speed of the ice punching?

    Size yes, speed no. I've gotten over 10 monstrous fish in one event with the advanced glove.
