Boff Pilot or Command?

mackermomomackermomo Member Posts: 247 Arc User
I'm returning after 3 years absence and I've now have a level 60 captain. I understand the point system, and Command, Temporal and such specialization. I cannot figure out how to train one of my BOFFs for the same specializations or understand the benefits. I do have a couple ships that will take a command BOFF or a pilot BOFF, though.

Would someone mind giving me a good link to explain the system for BOFFs and please let me know what I need to do in order to train a BOFF in a specialty, like a pilot? Thank you.

while i'm not sure of the links, I can give a general idea of the boff specializations. First in order to train a boff in a specialization u need to unlock that option via spending the required points in that tree, then u can make a training manual for that specialization. from there it is simular to training in a new skill. the benefit to special training a boff is unlocking new boff powers. Take the pilot specialization, all of the boff powers r about fancy tricks to get an advantage over the enemy. Now for the only downside of specializations those skills can only be used in a station of the matching specialization. IE pilot power in a pilot station, cant use a command power in a pilot station. Over all imho these powers add a new dimension to boff setups

Command, temporal, and intel specialization also have ground abilities that a bridge officer can use; these are basically the same as the kit modules - if you have a bridge officer specialized for a ship, you can always throw some of those abilities on the officer as well (training manuals from either bridge officer trainer, or if you have enough points in specialization, the 'officer training' R&D school, or exchange)

The main thing to remember is that training a BOFF to be a Command BOFF is exactly the same as normal training. Depending on how many spec points you have spent, you might be able to create the manual. (Check under officer training in the R&D menu) If you don't you can always buy one from the exchange. Look for a qualification, ie command Qualification, Pilot Qualification. Then go to the skills on the boff you are looking at, there is a drop down menu that lists the Specilizations, when you have the qualification, the learn button will light up.

After that its just like training normally. Oh and you dont have to limit a boff to one spec. I currently have a Tac Boff that uses Pilot/tac in space, and Command/tac on the ground.

Very good information, folks. I'll keep training my main character into the specializations and see what options open up for me. Thank you all for your time.

Neither, both are garbage. Temporal/Strategist is your space warfare combo, unless you utilize a torpboat, in this case Command makes sense.
Also, your dili grind toons may potentially like the XP bonus from Command spec.

Thank you. How does command assist a torp boat?

I believe it has abilities that buff torps, such as a torpedo version of the ground expose/exploit mechanic. I personally run pilot/intel on all my toons, never found any of the others very appealing/exciting when I read through them, but then I also can't be bothered to max any of them either, lol

Pilot while not the DPS meta skill does have it's uses.

    Immunity from Warp Core Breaches
Up to 40% increased turn rate (AoY toon to 3 max specs)
Up to 30% all damage if you keep at max throttle.

But the question was "BOFF PILOT OR COMMAND", and you don't need a Pilot Bridge Officer to benefit from the Pilot Spec Tree.
