Putty! Putty! Windows to mend! Who will buy my putty from an old putty seller?

Those damn Yanks traitors to the Crown wrong side drivers American chaps class teams and departments as singular collectives. The correct side of the pond recognises collectives are, by their nature, plural.

Usually 'is' is used to refer to bands or teams as a singular unit (incorrectly of course) but often it's used for larger organisations as well.

I was going to post a typical pro America response to this.. then I realized that I'm less then a week away from having to elect one of the two worst people on the planet to lead my country and now I'm finding myself wishing we had remained under the crown.

If England says that 'is' is correct, then I 'is' cool with that. :)

Take a third option. (Well, fourth, actually - the third would have been "don't vote"...)

As another U.S. citizen in the same boat as you - I almost feel the same - then I look at the current state of British politics, as well as what will happen to the British economy as a result of the 'Brexit' vote; and realize BOTH sides of the Pond are just plain screwed.

Those overly stuffy, class concious proponents of afternoon tea British chaps should not be used as good examples of English grammar. They spell words like 'harbour' and 'metre', along with a great many other words, incorrectly. They also tend to be melodramatic. As in, "I say. Your grammar is frightfully wrong! It is all just so terribly messy!"

They themselves barely speak their native tongue. Proof? Who else calls a dish which does not contain a single gram of ox by the name Oxtail soup? Im HocheDeutsch, fried potatoes are pomme frites. To yer garden variety Limey, the same thing is called 'chips'. While potato chips are called crisps. I like a cookie with my glass of chocolate milk. Not a biscuit.

To borrow a very old phrase from Strine. Do not come the acid with me.

As far as I'm aware the 'u' is added in certain words so we don't get mixed up with the onion wearing garlic flavoured mime artists French folk.

Besides, it's a terribly poor show to accuse us of being melodramatic, frightfully uncouth to say the least.
The fact that they can't pronounce "aluminum" correctly is the perfect reason not to trust the British when it comes to the "English" language.

As mentioned below, aluminium is correctly spelt with a second 'i' so is properly pronounced here. We have to spell sulphur with a phonetic 'f' to appease the mob over the Atlantic simple folk of the US and in return you're supposed to give poor Al its second 'i'.

Explain then why that part of world insists on pronouncing the word lieutenant as "left-tenant"

Simple. The word Lieutenant is french for 'in the place of (in lieu of) a captain' and the fanciful history of transcription of the letter 'u' lead to a corruption where it was more often rendered 'v' leading to the word becoming levtenent, later standardised to lefttenent. The Royal Navy used to (I don't know if they still do) pronounce it l'tenent missing out the problematic letters all together.

Arrg no, I wasn't clear enough. 'are' is correct, not 'is'.

I don't envy your choice, the corrupt liar vs. the loose cannon with no principles. Even the two main protest parties are lead by a man ignorant of foreign affairs and a woo peddler with no grasp of science.
Still, I hear Canada's nice this time of year.
As another U.S. citizen in the same boat as you - I almost feel the same - then I look at the current state of British politics, as well as what will happen to the British economy as a result of the 'Brexit' vote; and realize BOTH sides of the Pond are just plan screwed.

It's looking like it might not happen for years (if at all now) and that uncertainty will be far worse on the markets than a yes or no in or out decision.

At least you still have two parties (forget the president's) functioning as they always do, we've been left with a government reduced to nothing but Brexit and lurching towards the right and an opposition party that's falling in on itself. If a General Election was called neither party would be able to stop their own civil wars for long enough to govern so would end up with no power despite a majority.

What was the topic again? Oh, yes, grammer :D. Tell me Americans, why do you hate the letter 'U'? The Canadians love it, the Australians love it, the South Africans love it, can't you find a little place inside your honour or flavour for it?

JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

"The grammar police is coming" is actually a good sentence if with grammar police they mean a named group...
    Merely pointing this out. ;)
