Other than 10% better hull and shields you get 1 console. However, that console is typically tactical console unless the non fleet version of the science only has 4 science console, then the fleet version will have 5 science consoles (like the Nautilus). Therefore, getting a fleet version of a starship generally does not increase the amount of damage you do using "space magic", but it will do more weapon damage.
Though, you can install a universal console that increases exotic damage into that extra tactical console slot like the Constriction Anchor.
Considering you're probably putting universal consoles where your tac console slots are it's a win/win.
Also, Science is IMO the most fun on the ground. Using Nanite Health as a "fire and forget" heal and MedTri as a fast heal, you still have 3 slots open for some damage abilities. I keep Exo Field and Neutronic always on standby, and vary the last one depending on the flavor of the month (currently using the Freeze Kit from the Kelvin Box). Edging on 2k hits for Exo. As for a weapon I always like something that has a fast ROF and Exploits (since most Sci abilities Expose). Compression Pistols fit the bill nicely.
