Hanger pets are basically drones you use one certain ships like a carrier or dread to increase your DPS. If the ship has a hangar bay then you can launch them yes. On pc i think they're less than intelligent most the time but on console they seem to behave pretty well.

Hangar pets, are an addition to certain ships. As paradox mentioned, carriers have them, most dreadnaughts, and handful of others... the escort carriers, and the multi-mission ships.

Also, they not only provide added DPS, but that can also give some additional control and debuff effects.

Fed Runabouts can lock a tractor beams on your target, Delta flyers have a tachyon beam... and so forth.

Of course certain ships can actually launch frigate class hangar pets. These give a nice amoutn of added DPS and are more durable in combat.

And just like ship consoles and weapons, they come in different grades, from white all the way up to violet. Though you can get purple quality from the dilithium store, and some can only be bought from fleet stores.

    Hope that helps. :)

If you look in the dil store or the fleet starbase, there are slightly better versions of the ones that come with ships; and many ships unlock the ability to use their hanger pets on other ships for more customization.

hanger pets are big cats you tie to the back of your ship and drag behind your ship.

they live in the hanger. that's why there called hanger pets..

I like them quite a bit. I'm flying 3 different Romulan ships. 2 of them have a hangar bay. I've replaced the default Scorpion fighters with the purple named Peregrine fighters from the Dilithium store and they deal a nice amount of damage. They also benefit from one of my ships Rank 5 abilities. When I activate Beam Overload or Rapid Cannon Fire, they receive the boost as well.
Biggest downside is that they are very squishy. If they are close to an exploding ship. 9 out of 10 times they will die.

XBox version: I really like hanger pets on console and bought my first dilithium store upgrade last night. One difference I could tell was surviveability was much better for the dil store pets. My engineer has been specing for carrier. Just about to get a PC version character up high enough to run a carrier and may try it there.

    Three questions:

    1. I saw someone mention that console pets are smarter. Are PC carrier pets viable?
    2. What class is good for a carrier build? I've done engineer on console. Thinking about science on PC.
    3. Does any faction have an edge with carriers? I've only played Federation but am thinking about Klingon.

    1. I'm not sure if console pets are smarter, but PC pets have no AI routine for dodging warp-core breaches. Unless you're using Xindi pets with Scratch the Paint (which you can only buy if you own a lockbox Xindi carrier), dead enemies lead directly to dead fighters. Frigates might be more resilient, I've never used them.

    2. No class has any abilities that only boost carrier pets, so this is the same question as it is for any other ship or build.

    3. Klingons are the only faction that has a free two-hangar carrier (the Vo'Quv) meaning that to test the idea, they are probably best (although, if you like the idea and want to invest in it, they're currently the worst, not having an in-faction t6 carrier).
Depending on your budget, though, the Feds have a Zen-store t6 carrier with a fleet version, the Romulans have their Kelvin Lockbox ship, and there are a variety of cross-faction lockbox carriers.

    1. I too am unsure of what the consoles have since I've been on PC since launch. But, that said, I know the PC carrier pets did get an AI "upgrade" (and I use that loosely) to avoid warp core breeches... but they do try to avoid them. The problem is that fighter class pets are ultra-squishy, the utli class (runabouts and so forth) are a little more sturdier, and frigates are at the top in survivability, only down side is you need a "full" carrier to launch them.

    2. Are you asking for all around build? If that's the case, then Sci normally is a good fit for carriers. But the thing with STO is that any career toon can fly any ship. Its just that the ships are "optimized" for their specific careers in mind. There are some starship traits.. ship mastery bonuses... and the skill system even has some bonuses and boon type items for carrier pet performance.

    3. Right now.. not overly. Out of the box, the KDF does as they have had carriers in game the longest and have the only free one in the game. Fed have more variety, and Roms have Scimitars. there are also the cross factions ones, but as mentioned those come from lockboxes or the lobi store. Unless you are sitting on a fortune of ECs. :)

    Hope that helps. :)
