Still cannot run DirectX11 on notebooks with IGD and dedicated video card

gaevsmangaevsman Member Posts: 3,190 Arc User
The problem persist, as the detection algorithm for the primary card still defaults to the IGD instead the dedicated graphics card, can we avoid automatic detection and just select the primary card that can be used?, it list the right one on the selection, but is running on the internal (HD graphics, for example) and the game cannot load.

When Direcx11 was first introduced, the game used to list every card detected in the system, so i can force it to use the one i wanted, now it does this automaticly and cannot be changed, so it hangs, please get a look at this before release!, its important for the new ilumination.

Yup, its the problem with the video card detection algorithm..

    I responded to this in another thread as follows;
gaevsman, hm typically you would tell the game which video card to use in the nvidia control panel and not in game on lap tops.

Now the question is do people with lap tops know what profile to point towards. You would use Nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings. Set globally to use nvidia vid card. Probably not a good idea for games as profiles have compatibility settings etc. If you don't like using globally hit the program settings tab. Deselect show only programs shown on this comp. Now select the proper profile. In the case of Tribble and Redshirt you select GameClient.exe and not Star Trek: Online. Make GameClient.exe use the nvidia vid card. Selecting Star Trek: Online to use the nvidia card will not make it use it. See if that helps at all to ensure it uses the NVidia vid card.

If you want to try using the Star Trek: Online profile download nvidiainspector. Run nvidiaprofileinspector. Profiles top left type in Star Trek and scroll and select Star Trek: Online. Then to the right hit the green plus sign add application. Point towards the gameclient.exe located in your livetest folder. Before hitting open, change the type of file from Application exe name to Application Absolute Path. Then hit open. Now playtest will use Star Trek: Online as the profile. Note this is required for SLI to work on Tribble.

The only problem I have with changing the nvidia profiles is which one is actually the correct one for beta testing. I always change the profile as I described as I used to use SLI and for SLI to work I had to change the profile. GameClinet.exe profile does not have the SLI compatibity bits set. It looks like stereo vision would also require this. So i still question why nvidia points to the gameclient.exe profile. And especially now that we have Lighting 2.0 which profile should be used. Note I've noticed no difference between using either profile in regards to lighting issues. It may not matter except as regards SLI and ensuring you point towards the correct profile when using a lap top.

I am curious which profile we should actually be using. Ignoring making SLI work for the moment. If it's supposed to be Start Trek: Online, can someone please tell NVidia and have them add star trek online/playtest/gameclient.exe and star trek online/beta/gameclient.exe to the Star Trek: Online profile. It's confusing as hell the way it is currently.

First off i went ahead and did some actual testing on my laptop to verify what i wrote above and to test some other things. Everything is as i posted above. NVidia will control which video card to use and not sto for laptops. This is how it's working currently on Live and Tribble. This is typically how it works for battery saving purposes and I have no problem with it. btw STO ran fine with either the igd or my gt540 on both tribble and live.

There was 1 thing odd but not unexpected. When I used the star trek: online profile for live and set it to auto select the GPU it always correctly chose NVidia. When i used the gameclient.exe profile for Tribble and set it to auto select the GPU it would always incorrectly choose the IGD. This is an NVidia issue and not an sto issue. Again the gameclient.exe profile is just to old for tribble and redshirt and both should probably use the star trek: online profile. Changing the star trek: online profile to include gameclient.exe as previously explained and setting star trek: online profile to auto select the GPU correctly chose NVidia for Tribble.

Note that AMD users I'd first try changing the sto profile to use the gpu you want it to use. IF it doesn't work then add application, the gameclient.exe that's located in the playtest folder. Then select which gpu to use. Google for the correct steps.

BTW power settings for your laptop should be set to performance as well to ensure it uses the correct gpu.

I think that about covers it.

I tested this in 10 different laptops, and i replicate the problem in every one even setting it in nvida control panel, including a pc with dual graphics and the same problem persists, i'll check what you are posting, thou with amd notebooks the same happens, i'll let you know what i can find, thanks for the info!

Note also in the NVidia control panel if you have checked desktop tab, add "run with graphics processor" to context menu. You would right click sto online and choose which gpu to use. Works for Live and does not work for tribble nor redshirt as both of these will use the gameclient.exe profile. And this we've already determined does not work correctly. Besides right clicking only tells it to use x gpu for star trek: online profile only. So it won't tell it to use the gpu you selected and will instead use IGD if gameclient.exe profile is set for auto detect or igd and not NVidia.

So basically you should ignore right clicking sto online to select the gpu for tribble and redshirt as it won't work. Thought i'd mention that in case you were also trying this method to choose which gpu to use. And you're welcome. ;)

OK, i made it work, thanks for the info, used nvidia inspector to fix the issue, and even unninstalled the drivers to start fresh and replicate the procedure, (leaving in auto the profile) and works like a charm!, i'll test it in other computers, to finally solve the isue, thanks for the help!, as soon as i can i'll try to write a tutorial to help others based on this new information.

Been this way since I been playing and that's several years now. If you're going to write a tutorial to fix this as suggested include how to make redshirt work and also include that it's required for SLI users if they want the benefits of SLI to work. Cryptic should just get with NVidia and have them include tribble and redshirt to the correct profile.

    Glad I could help.
