Star Trek Online: Rebirth (what if)

Taking inspiration from DC Comics on the title, and I know the likelihood of this ever happening is, well, unlikely, but it can't hurt to speculate, can it? However, if such an event ever took place via Cryptic, how do you imagine they'd handle it? What would you imagine (not to be confused with what you'd like) to happen? What changes could you see taking place? What elements of the game could you see removed, revamped or rectified? This isn't to be mistaken for a "what would you like" question, no. We've had enough of them, and (some) people have finally got their T6 Constitution.

It's probably worth noting that a clean slate would be out of the question; too much investment, unlocks and progress has been made by too many people for Cryptic to come along and say "okay, we're wiping the slate clean". If they ever did that, they might as well retire themselves cause their core player base wouldn't dare return.

Speculate away...

Anything like that would depend on where it would restart at, just a plain do-over, or a different time period, like during the Romulan wars(which i thought STO was about before i bought a copy), TOS/TMP, the Cardassian wars just before TNG?

It is not hard for Cryptic to "wipe the slate clean". Of course, that would only involve the story and not various gameplay features and ships. The TOS Starfleet micro-faction did it by having us time travel to the 25th Century and SWTOR did it with their new expansion by having the main character trapped in Carbonite for 5 years while a new enemy conquered the known galaxy. Cryptic could do something similar to Star Trek 2009 with Spock and Nero where our characters accidentally travel to a new dimension with new allies and enemies. Or they could go with the standard time travel to the future that has already been used for TOS Starfleet micro-faction or travel to Andromeda.

The only thing that Cryptic can remove is PvP since they have removed everything else that can be removed. The original FE series and Klingon story arcs could be revamped since all story arcs from launch have already been revamped.

I'd probably want the Iconian War redone to include Iconian Red Alerts, and additional queued missions that have the same objectives but take place on different worlds to change up the scenery a bit, and to help push the narrative this is a galaxy-wide war, not just a war for Qo'noS. as well as a level 60 Iconian ground and Iconian space battlezone. I'd probably take it one step further and come up with some Iconian War-related duty officer missions, and an Iconian War admiralty campaign. I'd also probably include having T'Ket's dismembered arm added as a wall trophy option.

Really, the Iconian War was the only thing I'd like to give Cryptic a mulligan on. That many years of plot build up ending with a lackluster "war" that takes place only in an episode series was kind of meh.

I think they'd have just one mega-faction, with varieties (or mini-factions) all feeding into the one end-game result. I know it sounds like I'm describing what we have now, but I mean if they did a reboot, they'd just do it all from the beginning and it would be a smoother experience. Each faction/group would just be an alternate way to start, but the journey ends up at the same mega faction at the end. That would make gear, reps, fleet holdings, doffing, and so much more just easier to manage at the end-game. As well as ships and the like.

TLDR: If they did this all over again, they'd likely not have more than one actual faction.

They should just fracking go back and make those Red Alerts. TRIBBLE what ever is currently on the agenda, adding these missions would be a huge boon to make the arc feel real. It's the most important arc in the entire game, basically.

Otherwise I thought 2015 was awesome. I loved getting a new mission every month. I definitely prefer it to isolated content dumps like expansions.

If they had a 'Rebirth', I'd like to see ships with better loadouts and a complete rebalancing of ships and damage. The current meta is pretty poor in comparison to the SFC series. It's incomprehensible that a small ship can out DPS any ship twice it's size. There's just no way a small ship has the same amount of hard points that output the same as a larger ship either. Smaller ships are more nibble and harder to hit, that's their strength.

Weapons loadouts should be seperated into Fore, Aft and Side arcs and Torpedoes and Energy Weapons should be seperate, that way it gets rid of total dependance on 8 Beams that we have. We also now have it that Beams and Cannons do the same damage no matter the distance, where in fact Cannons are supposed to be short-ranged energy weapons that do heavier burst damage at close range and Beams do a sustained amount of damage at longer range (I'd explain the physics of this, but people would just read past it!). I would also dispose of all mods on weapons. Again, the current meta doesn't make any 'tactical' sense as everyone wants the CrtD3 + Pen mods, so we might as well make all weapons equal and not bother with mods.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

    To add to @snoggymack22 post..

What about getting rid of Captain classes as well.
    You'd just be a captain.
With all captain abilities available to you when you create a new character but you could only ever select 3 at any given time.
But could swap them in and out at will.

Could add a lot of diversity in builds.

Also having all the species under one roof and available to all, would add some extra layers of build diversity.

I'd also give each species a special skill/trait for both space and ground.
Efficient, Leadership, Pirate etc... (they could make a few new ones to spice things up)

I believe most species should have at least one of each.
With a very few that specialize in either ground or space.

They way it is now, only a few species get an inherent space trait.
If you look at Vulcans for example. All they have is ground traits out of the gate. But we all know Mr. Spock was no slouch on the bridge.
Logically :P Vulcans could be a prime candidate to receive the Efficient trait.
    Klingons -> Pirate
    Ferengi -> Salvage Specialist

    Etc etc.

The more I think about this, the more I think there needs to be a big Species revamp, similar to the boff/skill tree revamps.

Yep, pretty much. Clean slate is mk15 gear and T7 ships. It will happen some day.

I know this will get me flamed but...

I think if they were to reboot the game I would like to think they would make the holy trinity actually matter. IMO the end game (or lack there of) suffers because there isn't a reason to be anything other than DPS. I'd like to see raid type end game that just isn't possible with the current set up. Long missions that include space and ground missions that require at least one of each captain. Also, this could help PvP.

I also like the idea of simplifying weapons someone mentioned above. However I would prefer them to have mod slots and allow us to craft specific mods for our weapons.

Allowing Captains to spec in any job would be nice too (with respecs available) where captain and ship choice would actually matter for the role they play.

As I recall that might have been an April Fool's prank and went nowhere.

There is always April 2017 for it. My problem with it is that it only lasted a day. April 1, 2017 lands on a Saturday so Cryptic could activate it on Friday and we would have the weekend to remember the good old days before Reputation grinds, P2W, Dilithium, Sector Space Revamp, and the removal of mission grind and Exploration. As well as all the various missions that have been removed from the game over the years.

I was playing the game when the first Rebirth came out, though I wasn't when the game launched. Sadly, the launcher stated there is an error, and I couldn't play on redshirt, I heard there was a way arround that issue, but by the time I saw that, it was to late :(. But what if they would have rebirth on redshirt all the time? They wouldn't have to update it or anything since they could just use the first version of the game that had everything working. Just as a little thing on redshirt. If they would ever do that, I would be very interested in the very first ESD, that even had the weird exterior.
