So, I'm considering buying the whole package, but I'm wondering if the community thinks these ships are still viable at the T5U level before I commit.
I fly the Caprimul (Romulan) Dyson science destroyer on my Engineer toon. Love the hell out of that ship. The Romulan version is arguably the best out of the 3 (Battle cloak..singularity abilities, looks...). The only other "Romulan Sci ship options" are: the Ha'nom (Huge and too big/slow for me) and the lockbox R'mor (which has no Romulan niceitys for a romulan ship like cloak or singularity abilities..)
I use it for everything, PVE,PVP..
For Feds..there are other sci ships that are perceived to be better, but DSD are not bad if you stay in sci mode.
That said...Ive seen people do 140k with a DSD in ISA..So..Id say its more preference now than anything else with sci ships..
Viable, but not that great, IMO. If you're wanting it for Feds, they have a pretty decent selection of T6 Sci ships, at least if you're on PC. KDF and Rom have less options, so its relative standing is a bit higher on those factions. I would definitely wait for a sale if you're going three-pack so you can get not only a lower price but the Upgrade tokens too.
While I love the look of the Rom DSDs, I don't actually like playing them, as they always felt sub-par compared to the Fed Vesta options back when T5 was the only game in town, and lacking the 13th fixed BOff ability really hurts this compared to a T6 Sci ship. I have the C-Store Tac Harpia version (I liked the lighting bolt gun console and only wanted to spend for one) and the Event version, but I leave both dry docked, instead opting for flying the odd Lobi store option of the Tal Shiar Adapted Battle Cruiser on my Rom Sci with the Commander Universal set to Sci (though that is somewhat expensive PC side and unavailable on consoles as of yet).
They are pretty medicore compared to all the fancy fed & box/lobi sci ships but unfortunately they're the best store ships red & green has access to.
If you just stick to sci mode you're getting a decent sci ship with a tactical leaning as escorts they've got some bigger issues.
Even with the slight trun rate buff they're still pretty unwieldy for escorts, the lack of more tac boff seats can become a real issue and the friggin fused proton cannons not only cap out at mk12 VR they also take away a lot freedom in terms of making your build.
Also by default you start in sci mode and have to active tac mode after every map change and if you change map during a mission or die you're getting forced back into sci mode with a ~10 sec cooldown on the mode change.
Just saying there are reasons why you barely see a DSD around anymore.
I would say no. I bought one a year ago, poured huge amounts of time and resources into setting it up, and regretted it ever since. The DSD is a thoroughly mediocre ship. The whole idea of the two modes was a bad one, the idea of orienting it toward Proton weps was a failure, the damn thing is a turkey all the way around.
And no, it is not the only Z store ship for Rom and KDF, the 31c Sci Ship is totally cross-faction, AFAIK.

25c Faction specific science ship..yes it is.. For 31c ships, there is no such thing as Romulan or Klingons (as Factions) as they now are part of the federation at that time..Tiz why its cross faction..
Op.. These ships, along with everything else in the game can be made to preform if your willing to make it work.
Check out this ship and set up. Its right in line with many other science ships in this game - From this same User (@astrozombie).Granted this is ISA dps run from a Tac captain/Pro DPSer, but still its a great reference stick..
Most "Cannon" Builds with sci ships eeked out around 120kdps.
My rom engineer is not set up for DPS..but I can still pull 50-60k (with crappy piloting and mostly free traits) dps in an ISA (which is way more than you need in advanced ques).Ive seen higher..but yea...ships in this game are whatever you choose to make of them. I haven't seen any that cant break the 100k dps mark..
