What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Wow, what happened?

I go away for a few months, and figure, hm, I'll play again, try some of the new stuff....but the lag is so horrible it's almost unplayable. What happened?

I'll grant you that the planet killers in Undine space battlezone can turn into a slideshow when everyone unloads every power and console clicky at once, but lag everywhere? Nope.

A lot 'Server not responding' when changing maps. About one time each hour kicked of the server, I can log in right away. And the weird bug that my space ship disappears and returns during space combat.

Also, since they are improving the graphics, when I zoom in, I get those ugly shark tooth lines, as if my resolution is low or something. This can be an issue of my system, while I play on medium + settings. When I go on high settings my system cannot handle it. My room gets on summer days about 25 to 30 degrees. So I think my graphical card gets too hot.

That is it, futher the game goes fine.

That is incorrect. What people who complain about lag is saying is that they are starving and living in the street so it must be that the big evil corporations have screwed EVERYONE and nobody has a big mac and a condo to live in. This of course can easily be dispproved as YOU have a big mac and a condo to live in.

Look, those of us who keep saying that the lag isn't an issue with cryptic ain't saying that YOU don't have lag...we are saying that the issue is with YOU and not EVERYONE else. If it was an issue with EVERYONE else...you'd know...real quick. And it's not like I am one of those blessed with a good connection either. Cogent does not like me...and it probably doesn't like a lot of other people...but that isn't something cryptic can do short of paying for a server farm move...which ain't cheap.
I have issues with cogent from time to time also. People don't seem to understand this particular issue and they don't want to understand it. They just want to rage.

I can play all my other Xbox One games online flawlessly without any issues, but this one lags and disconnects so it must be MY internet. Easy answer is easy I suppose.

Ummmmmm......yeah. It HAS to be my internet when ALL my other MMOs are playing just fine with NO LAG, rubberbanding, or SNRs. It is ONLY STO that is having this issue, so it must be my ISP.

    Don't you love simple answers?

I had an issue recently where I couldn't connect to the game for about 4 hours. I checked on the forum but only a small handful of about 3 other players had the same issue. I ran a tracert and at the point in which my connection went through cogent's network is when I started hitting massive lag and eventually couldn't connect to the game.

Cogent is an provider that owns network infrastructure that countless people connect through. Along with numerous other companies around the country and world, they help to make up the infrastructure of the internet. Cogent has had spats with other companies recently and have not always had clean data connections with other providers so there actually can be connection problems that are not cryptic's fault.

After about 4 hours, I tried connecting again and was successful. I ran another test and found that my connection with cogent was mostly cleaned up and my connection to the game was almost unimpeded. Keep this information in mind when assuming that the issue is on the developer. The "easy" answer isn't always the correct one.

Same, I even play a couple Wii U games online with no problems, but STO is bad. Must be my internet.

Actually, yeah it can be just you, even if you only have issues with STO.

That being said, I've been having some issues lately that I know are on my end, every now and then I'll have ridiculously bad lag.

Ran a tracert, nettest and ping test earlier. By the look of things the Boston location of cogent is once again the culprit.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

I only use proxies for the same reason... and monitor their lag, so i change to the best responses... only way to play!

I love how people who have no idea how thee internet works keep saying I can connect every where else so it can't be me. As soon as you utter those words, all you are doing is proving you have no idea how the internet works.
To be honest; I don't know how the internet works, I'm an OBGYN -I know where babies come from though.

I just find it odd that every other game I own, which is quite a few, work perfectly fine, but STO disconnects etc.

In basic terms, that's because of the route the data takes. I'm in the UK and I don't get lag at all. If it was lag at Cryptic's end, I would get it worse!

I get that most of you don't work in IT and have only a most basic understanding on what happens beyond the router you use...if that so allow me to explain a bit so you get an idea of what's going on.

I live the in suburbs and drive into the downtown area every day. During my commute, the traffic is light in the suburbs and picks up once I hit the highway heading into downtown. About halfway there, I jump off and take a few side streets to get into work and the traffic is decent, but not bumper to bumper like the highway.

Now, if I got up at the same time and decided to go to the Northland office, my drive through the suburbs remains the same and I even get on the highway, but I very quickly take an interchange heading away from downtown and have a smooth drive all the way to that office.

Now, let's consider my buddy who leaves south of the office downtown. He doesn't need to take the highway. He leaves his suburb and drives through routine traffic straight into work without issue, but were he to go to the Nothland office, he would have...yeah...light traffic as well, because he is going the opposite direction on the highway of all the traffic heading into downtown.

Our ISPs and the different gaming servers work much the same way. Level3 could be having issues with a router in Chicago and Comcast and At&T are both using it for routing service out of the Midwest to the East coast and users see lag. Meanwhile, Comcast traffic out of Florida is fine because it's routed straight up the coast to that game server.

The game servers have no control how the ISPs and backbone of the internet routes traffic at any given time and whether or not they are having issues and the issue you see could be with your router, the router up the street, or a state away and not be an issue for most everyone else and yes, this does mean that other games may play fine, because the route you take to get there is different.

Ohh, and the Server not responding issue also has something to do with this...sometimes you need a pretty large download for an area, yet you are only getting a one lane road because of heavy construction on the highway...the server isn't see your PC's response that it got everything in a set amount of time and assumes you disconnected...but in reality, you got most of the download, so you log back in and now, finish what's left of the download in short order, even with the reduced number of lanes.

In conclusion, if it is the server, you'll see a lot of posts about it as it will be impacting a lot of players. If others aren't having issue, it's a sign that it isn't the server, but somewhere in-between. This is why some use proxy servers, as it allows them to get themselves around the bottlenecks in many cases by going to Atlanta and then up the coast with the Florida traffic rather than up to Chicago with the rest of the Midwest players.

    No lag here.

I'm with this guy...WHAT lag? Never run as smooth as these days? Are you logging from EU perhaps? Either the ISP might be a prob or your settings.

I came back after 3 years not playing. Game running pretty smooth for me but, two weeks ago I was pulling my hair out with rubberbanding. Couldn't understand what was going on until I checked for windows update. Sure enough, there were updated to install. Windows 10 is notorious for being a computer hog for updates...

No lag, but LOTS of "Server not responding..." whenever I change maps.

Yes, I see lots of that lately--it's new, but it could be something not carrying the load well between Florida and Boston.
