Greetings.
Lets start with i play this around 1-2 years back and have 3 lvl 50 captain (1 from every faction).
So let me tell the stuff now is a lot more confusing than in the past, but way lot more to do.
For example the whole crafting system rework....confusing as hell, it can be understanded in time (the old crafting materials can be used too, you just need to use them in space and turn them in to those new crafting materials).
(Still need to figured out how to upgrade weapons and stuff).
This followed by the bridge officer training, what i understand manuals needed to be crafted first than used on officers(?).
All of my characters now considered a bit under geared for lvl 50, because of the new modular Kits and moduls for main character. (that need to be figured out too how to get them...etc.)
All this things are good, gives more depth to the game, little confusing, but can be learned with time.
One big advice, let me warn all other returning players with lvl 50 character, don't ever use the lvl 60 promotional xp boost, its a trap, because that character going to be screwed hard: you dont get any new gear or what so ever to even enjoy the fights againts lvl 60 enemies in regular mission (smallest frigates have150k hp, not immposible but not enjoyable for sure with those old gear).

Bridge Officer training took a little less time to figure out, but I can't be sure I have it down really. I haven't got to try it, because I haven't gotten to craft a training manual, because the new crafting system is unintuitive to someone who knew the old system.
Overall though I think it's going to be a net positive. I'm not happy about having to regrind Crafting skill when I once was able to craft anything you could make in the game, but these are things that can be learned. I don't think all the new materials were needed (why couldn't you use the new system with the old materials?), but I'm sure there are some people who are enjoying the more complex system now just as I enjoyed the older simple system. If the BOff training works the way I think it does, it's a clear improvement.
There are only 2 things I've come across so far that are definite negatives in my book.
#1, the removal of the old Romulan Front chapter. A tiny little bit of it has been reworked into the new Romulan Mystery, but I loved the old quests. I don't understand why they new ones couldn't follow as a new Episode. I'm particularly grumpy about it because I'm stuck with a mission I can't turn in since I was on that Episode!
#2, the removal of the Unexplored Regions. Sure those missions were simple, and only semi-random, but they were a great way to jump in and have a little fun when you had limited time. And as a player mostly driven by Exploration, they were the closest I ever felt in the game to BEING in Star Trek. (And probably why I hit level 50 while only half way through Episode 2.) I haven't found a replacement for that.
