Which is extremely stupid. Phrases are much easier to remember and harder to crack than random gibberish. With random gibberish passwords, most people will need to keep a piece of paper with their password written on it nearby or have it saved in some text file since they won't be able to remember a bunch of random nonsense.
Although, it might have absolutely nothing to do with his password. Letting someone else use their account is a good way for someone illegally accessing your account. It seems to be standard practice now for various computer services to send you an email if a new computer is being accessed. So it is only necessary at a minimum to have a different password for your email, bank account, and other important accounts from a commonly used password. In theory, it should be impossible to access your STO account on another computer without also knowing your email password due to Account Guard.
Your account may have been TRIBBLE because you have a key logging or other type of virus on your PC. I would do a full scan of your PC as soon possible if you have not done so already. There are many free anti-virus programs that you can download. I use AvastFree.

I also use the free version of Malwarebytes to scan for malware and trojans as a second line of defense. The free version does not automatically scan your PC so you have manually do it yourself. Click the following link to download the program; scroll down so see the link for the free version.

I certainly hope that you did not buy EC or ships from a 3rd party online storefront. You never know if they will use your information without your consent. Additionally, it violates Cryptic's Terms of Service and they can terminate players' accounts if they find out that such purchases are made.
The only other situation that I can think of that may have led to your account being TRIBBLE is if you shared your login ID and password with a friend or family member.
As for passwords, never use randomly generated gibberish that was recommended by itpalg. You will likely not able to easily remember it, therefore you need to write it down. That can lead to three different negative situations:
#1 - You lose that piece of scrap paper you wrote down your password on.
#2 - Someone who lives with you or visits you may see the password if you have it out in the open.
#3 - You save that password in a text file on your hard drive and...
a) - Your PC gets TRIBBLE somehow and the password could be found.
b) - You either accidentally delete the text file or your hard drives crash and you can no longer retrieve your password.
As starkaos mentioned, it is best to use a phrase. It can be whatever as in the post made by [jonsills[/b]. The password could be something like the graphics card in your PC such as "nVidiaGTX980" or maybe a something like "MadeInChina" which is a pretty ubiquitous phrase since it seems everything is made there. Using capitals with the phrase makes it harder to crack. Or "I'llBuyThatForA$1" which is an even more complex password, but easy to remember.
