Is there a way to clear out default "suggestions" for items on quick bars?

I am learning to get used to the split bars, but my ADD and OCD are getting a little distracted at all the additional things that I did not put in the bars. Is there a way to take things out of the bar. Or clear them before I start populating the function bars?

Right-click and drag them off the bar, poof, they are gone.

However, changing ships (space) or swapping kits (ground) will totally hose them up again and you will have to go back and re-do them.
