It's the firing arcs. I have one toon who uses cannons and do ok with it, but I like to have a bit more leeway in staying on target. I also have trouble telling where enemies are relative to my ship when they're "above" or "below" and fly right by them thinking I'm lined up.
Most of my ships are cruisers because those were the type of ships the Delta Rising OPs Pack mostly included. The exceptions are the T6 Phantom Intel Escort and the T6 Mat'ha Raptor. It also included 2 science vessels that are likely not capable of using cannons. I actually use the T6 Scryer Science Vessel as a torpedo ship.
However, the KDF captains that flies the T5U / T6 BoPs definitely use dual heavy cannons.
Unfortunately nearly all 9 ships I purchased this year are cruisers; the KDF T6 Flagship bundle (for Checkmate and Super Charged Weapon ship traits), the cross faction T6 Battlecruiser bundle (for Emergency Power Cycle ship trait and because it is a great ship), and lastly the 31st century cross-faction Temporal bundle which has the T6 Ouroboros Temporal Raider. That's the only escort / raid I purchased this year, but at least it is a cross-faction ship.
Since money doesn't grow on trees and I have not put together a group of super villains to rob banks and steal candy from babies yet, I will have to put off purchasing the Pilot Cross-Faction Mega Bundle for 12,000 Zen until next year.
I use cannons on some ships and beams on others. Beams are for wider arc, and because faw is better than any cannon power, especially with lower tactical rank boff slots.
The kdf pilot ship I am doing the mirror event in uses cannnons. so does my mirror tvaro. My mirror mogai uses beams because it doesn't turn as fast.
Great ship, but you're kind of pigeon-holed into using plasma weapons if you plan on taking full advantage of the Plasma Lotus. Which isn't to say there aren't great plasma weapon options out there, but if you happen to enjoy other flavors of energy weapon, the weapon consoles don't buff the plasma lance.
Also, the ships with moving parts tend to break a lot, forcing you into one setting or the other, which requires you to die and respawn or change maps. But that's more of an issue with how transforming ships work in STO rather than anything inherently good or bad about the Dinaes itself.
Because beams will do 2x the damage of cannons (BFAW FTW). But seriously anything is good enough to rolfstomp anything in this game. I personally like cannons myself and use the quad cannons on my morrigu because it looks cool. This game is easy enough where really, just do what is fun and cool.
Pretty much this. STO is easy. The number one rule of thumb is "You do you". If you like the way a ship looks, you can make it work in any sort of content.
I'm a Reman Scientist and the ships I fly are : The Flambard Dreadnought warbird, Xindi Narcine, Obelisk Carrier (from requisitions), and the Dyson Science Survelliance Destroyer Warbird..
My favorite is the Narcine..2 hangars, more maneuverable than my Flambard, higher hull, and faster.. Just what I wanted in a carrier. Now I can't stealth like in my warbirds but it is a willing sacrifice when I can throw out 4 frigates to defend me XD

No such thing... unless you beam on board and hear a female computer voice counting backwards

"Get out of there! Get out of there now!"
I guess that would be an "Endgame" ship.
