As with any movie made in the last almost 4 years, I won't be seeing this until it comes out on Bluray. (The last movie I saw in theaters was Lockout, with Guy Pearce. Stupid cheesy fun and I enjoyed it for what it was. Plus it was written by Luc Besson, so... :p)

Glad to hear though that Beyond has more of a Trek feel to it. I didn't hate the JJ films but they definitely didn't feel all that Trek-like. But they were enjoyable sci-fi action movies so I had similar hopes for this one.

Now to avoid any spoiler-y topics for the next 4-5 months like I had to do with The Force Awakens and any other movie I have had any interest in.

Just saw in Imax a few minutes ago, i liked the previous films but this was substantially better in every way. Except not much chekov and now he's dead *shrug*. Enjoy while you can guys it'll likely be the last for obvious reasons.

Your logic doesn't make sense. Because if you're going to go watch a new fresh series, the argument you just made applies:

That's because you're giving him too much credit, he's not using logic. He's variously acting like a spoiled child stomping his feet who doesn't want to try something new because he's not getting what he wants, and at other times being a Grampa Simpson, scared by the way the way the world has changed into something he doesn't like or understand, and desperately longs for the good 'ol days. Which certainly weren't good, since he's pretty vocal about what an Enterprise fan he is, so if he didn't cut off his own legs at the knees in terms of what others should think of his taste, I don't know what will.

Actually, a fourth film was announced as a go just a week ago.

However, they have an impressive amount of integrity and respect for Anton Yelchin, and will not re-cast Chekov, he will no longer be around as a character. Which, in a way makes sense, for as any old TOS nerd like me knows, Chekov didn't even exist until the second season of TOS, so this will be a bit of a reverse.

It also fits if you go by the 5 year mission of the original timeline and include the animated series as years 4 and 5, where Lt. Arex replaced Chekov on the bridge.

I definitely did think of that. The navigator of the Kelvin in the first film seemed like a refernce to Lt. Arex's race.

It don't matter what they did to the 3rd movie. The first sets the route for the rest. The first was trash, so will be the rest. This won't be the first time or the last time. I don't watch a series, cause the first one was trash.

I will see Star Trek again once this current movie series is dead and put to the grave. And we get a whole fresh series.
Seems a bit unfair, especially since other Trek series have had movies with terrible writing.

For me, the issue with JJ-Trek was 2 movies with spotty writing vs series with multiple entries (some of which also had spotty writing). If the writing is significantly improved in this one, it should get a fair shot.

well they still stand, for the most part.

however, ST beyond (no spoilers or lest ye get the ire of many) destroyed any credibility JJ had as a director in my opinion. this movie directed by Justin Lin, and written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, is what we should have had all those years ago, this is the movie, the grade of movie which should have made it to the screens the first two times.

I cannot explain why, but this movie has blown away any bad juju of the Kelvin Timeline I may have had.

JUST got home from it, I loved it. Cried when Spock see's the picture... (no spoilers, but those of you who saw it too will know what I mean) and it definitely has me running to Star Trek Online to Captain my T6 Constitution Class!

Those usually came after the 1st one. So I can understand a bad one now and then. It happens, however this one was horrible out the gate. I saw the trailer to ID, and saw it was no different. So now I will wait until this series is over.

Gonna be a long wait, this series aint dieing anytime soon. Sorry.

No issues here. I have waited a decade for something new to come out. Unless the new show proves worthy. Then my wait won't be long. Unless its based off KU. Then I will wait again.

I tried to play nice, look at my KU connie reply on the Ten Forward area. I didn't bash or anything, straight out tech talk.

Just got home from seeing Beyond.. loved it.

Of course, I also enjoyed Star Trek, and Into Darkness so consider that as well. I thought it had minor flaws but overall was a very strong movie and an excellent addition to the series.

I also appreciated the solemn tribute to Leonard Nemoy, very tasteful and respectful.

Pretty much every comment you make in any thread involving the Kelvin Timeline films includes the words "jj trash" "jj garbage trek" "spoof trek" and numerous other terms which cannot be construed as anything other than bashing.

Check it out then. I made no remarks of that. Just pure on Tech on how I could make some changes to the ship. At least making it look better in my view of it. Though it may not be for others. Truth, I kept several parts from the KU ship.

Like I said, I played nice. And not setting up anyone to see bashing.

If you didn't say anything bashy and negative in that thread it would be the first and only Kelvin Timeline thread where that is the case.

Its the 2nd post in the Connie thread. The 1st I told the KU ship was horrible, ignore it. But then I came back with a better post telling what changes I would made. That is the one to read. I broke down the KU ship making some changes here and there.

Just to show I can play nice. Here I will share it again.

Ok I will work on this one. Since I love the Tech of Trek. I will put the KU issues aside and just focus on the ship.

Size - The movie they try to show the ship big, like Galaxy size. With the windows and other parts this just throws it off in proportion. I would at least shrink it down to around the size of the Excelsior. That way it will work with the current windows and lighting effects.

Saucer - I would do the Federation style lighting. Like they always used. I would get rid of the turrets that pop out and go with the usual weapon set up for that era. Plus use the beams types that they always used.

Neck - I would push the front forward until its about in place like the TOS/ TMP Connie. The back of the neck I would keep the same. Just push it forward just a little.

Stardrive - I would make it more rounder more similar to the TOS / TMP Connie. Then I would extend the main part back. More like the TOS / TMP Connie. At least about 1/2 way back to the shuttle area. The Deflector I would keep what is on the ship currently.

Nacelle Plyons - I would push them forward some. So it would be a little more toward the center of the Stardrive. Then widen it out to make them not so close to each other. To keep the same V shape of the TOS / TMP Connie when looking from the front / rear.

Nacelles - I would totally redo them. I would keep the bussard collectors. The Nacelles would be lot smaller and go for the TOS design. So it wouldn't be so out of proportion. The Cooling grid would be more like the TOS Connie, but on the insides and outsides. And put the rear part on just like the TOS Connie. The Bussards will be red, and the Cooling grids will light up in blue.

Interior - The Bridge can stay. Main Engineering, I would rip that out, and install a correct more functional Warp Core like the TMP one. Shuttle Bay would be reworked to fit the ship better. And I would more likely add a some more windows in places to as well.

After all this, I think it would be impressive.

Went and Saw " Beyond" last night, and I rarely see a movie on opening night. I have to say it was a GREAT TREK MOVIE!!! This movie SHOULD have been the sequel to '09 Trek. Everything about Beyond just SCREAMS " WE LOVE STAR TREK"! Simon Pegg and his Co-writer did a fantastic job on the story. None of it was a rehash of anything that came before. The homages to everything from TOS, to TNG, to DS9 to Voyager are very nicely done. Justin Lin, once again, proved he is a FANTASTIC director. The movie is visually stunning, yet the visuals actually ADD to the story, they not simply there saying " look at all the money we spent on CG this time!!" Just the fact that the Enterprise actually FIRE its weapons in this one makes it better than Into Dorkness!!!
Many emotional parts of this movie too. Into Darkness was focused to much on Kirk and Harrison, and remaking TWOK, this one definitely felt MUCH more like a TOS episode. The interactions between the characters was spot on!
I could go on and on about how great this movie is, I am very likely going to see it again, just so I can catch whatever I may have missed the first time. ( Theatre wasn't overly crowded, but OF COURSE someone had to talk on their cell phone halfway through the damn movie!).
    I give this movie a 9.5... simply because a 10 would seem unrealistic. >:)

I don't see Beyond as destroying the first two films, there are references to both in the film.

I see it as a bridge between the JJverse and the Prime universe.

    Spoilers Alert

The reference to Ambassador Spock, Some of the music, the USS Enterprise Model, Scotty's tiny bro, ect...

I was very pleasantly surprised how much different this film was, versus the first two. It WAS Trek, while the first two were "off". I did like them for the most part, don't get me wrong.

    Nice tribute to Nimoy.
Nice tribute to the original crew of Prime Universe.
Excellent character growth for most of the main cast.
I wasn't made to avert my eyes when it was revealed Sulu was TRIBBLE. (Sorry, I don't find same sex intimate interactions appealing.) And, at one point, I had genuine concern for his family.
Lots of nods to Enterprise (the series) as well as at least one to Voyager.
No photosensitive seizure warning needed, though the swift camera changes during action scenes, a trademark of Lin, should have a "Take your epilepsy meds before entering theater" warning.

I saw some design features of Enterprise-D in there at the end, with the flared neck/saucer juncture, as noted on the first page of this thread. Should make saucer separation much less of an ordeal.

And I agree with the person that said the destruction of the ship served the overall theme, and was done in such a way that was not a gimmick, as in past films. I was not moved to tears to see her go, as I was when I saw the refit Enterprise self-destruct in ST-III. I still tear up when I see that. But, I am glad we will see another film, hopefully done in the same manner, with good character interactions, and subtle plot themes, as in this one.

No, it's not the Trek I grew up with (I saw TMP on opening day as a kid) but now stands on its own legs, as far as I am concerned.

Nah the 2009 one was enough for me. Then I saw the trailer to Darkness, and saw it was more the same. Instead I enjoyed the TMP Directors Edition I have. For my Trek opening weekend.
