Oh here we go, the whole "make it free to play friendly or we will quit" line. Frakin freeloader want everything handed to them. Grind your butt off or swipe your credit card and get what you want.
By now everyone will have taken notice that you like to be contrary.
That however does not change the simple fact that high rates at the diltihium exchange hurt the free to play model.
It's all about perception and with the current exchange rates people are less likely to exchange dilithium for zen which hurts the free to play model. This drives players away and with that a source of micro transactions.
Both the people who only purchase zen and those who strictly purchase zen through dilithium exchange are minorities.
However, the largest source of income for a game with a F2P model comes from people for micro transactions. Not subscriptions or purchase of ship packs, but a small transaction to get 200-500 zen for utilities. That is also the group which WILL be driven away, along with any economic viability for the game, by high exchange rates.
If people were less likely to be exchanging their dilithium for Zen, the exchange value would decrease..... starting to happen a bit now, as dilithium value is going up slightly owing to the pending upgrade weekend.... There's nothing wrong with the exchange.... what is needed is more dil sinks so there is less free dil floating around and as such makes what is left of it more valuable.
nothing says very active Player base as well as reaching the weekly Goals for the Event. This time we have nearly made it to Tier one!!! I said before that numbers don't catch the truth - but I see this as an indication that Cryptic thinks that there are many more Players in the game than there really are. Which would sort of undermine my Argument that the F2P or Players who just want to spend a Little bit are leaving.
And just before the Event I was trying to do the badlands battlezone - I was one of 3 Players in the only active instance...which meant that I logged off and played armoured warfare instead

Well the exchange is down to around 420/1 I think it could go sub 400 this weekend as a massive upgrade cycle hits. Still if the made it the following weekend it would be better as more people could have completed the Rep system and have more gear to upgrade.
The exchange rate dropped to as low as 383 from what I saw last week after the tribble notes were released stating that the cooldown time for turning in Contraband was going to be 20 hours instead of 4 hours.
Similar to how a real stock exchange works, people panicked and started a run on the market which caused people to sell Zen at lower rates due to the initial perceived greater value of Dil. And like any knee jerk reaction in a stock market, cooler heads eventually prevailed and the Exchange rate proceeded to recover a bit.
Still, the exchange rate is down from around 490:1 so at least the increase in cooldown time is having an effect on the Dil market. Perhaps the exchange rate will decrease a bit after the fervor to get KT ships from the lock boxes begins to die down.
Moral of the Story:"Don't rely on Dil soley for your Zen needs."
It's not you- it's me. I just need my space.
