Does Social window search function actually work ?

Hello,
i received some mails, requests and invites from unknown players/characters so i got the idea to look them up through "Social search". I put in the characters name with no result, tried just first part of characters name - no results, user name - no results.
So I got curious and tried to lookup my own characters and myself, and no results of course.
At last tried someone from my fleet, who i knew was online right now and finally got a positive result.

I wonder why does that search function seem to work only with online people and characters ?
Am i doing it wrong ?
I would expect that it is normal to want to lookup friends or players even when they are not connected right now, so one could send them a message or add them to the friends list.

On other hand, regarding the fleet invites and friendship requests. Why is there no way to check, who did i get that invite or request from ? I think that is a normal thing to do before accepting such things ?

It works. But it also depends on what they have they're privacy settings set to. Or if they're inviting or going off line. I'd go with the former on this one and they have the privacy setting set to where only friends can see them online. This makes them invisible to a search from someone not on their friends list.
