*sigh*
It is in no way "false" to say "fight when you must" under conditions when you almost always "must." If you jump to the wrong conclusion based on a single sentence of an advertisement, that's your problem.
Sennah . Just take a look at this years e3 thats currently on. PC is getting a lotta lovin of late, especially with the piles of MOBAs thatve been pouring out the last year or two
Ugh, MOBAs. Between those and "team-based shooters", there's so damn many games to just ignore these days. The whole modern focus on multiplayer is kind of annoying for those of us who can't stand pvp.
(of course, I understand why they're doing it - MP is much cheaper to make, since the players provide much of the "content", you just have to shove out a new map pack every couple months. Meanwhile, SP games take a lot of work to make content for. Less potential profit.)

Couldn't agree more.

Not really. Sure, MP doesn't take as much scriptwork, but it's a lot harder to balance. And servers don't run themselves. It's more a general attitude of MP focus. People in charge don't see single-player games as important. This is most often seen in titles that feature both. MP modes tend to receive much more updates and improvements than SP, even in situations where the same content could just as easily be applied to both.
Like I said, my Feddy toons always open hailing frequencies. It's not their fault that everyone else in the game considers concentrated disruptor fire to be an appropriate response. What, they're just supposed to sit there and get dusted to appease your oddly situational ethics?
My what?
I'm with you on opening hailing frequencies. It'd be neat if the game actually reflected that step as more than head canon, but missed opportunities are only that. Like I said at the outset, I still have fun in the game.
Honestly, I occasionally wonder what was the exact moment you decided you had no other mode of interacting with me than to try and be a **** on every occasion, to the point of actively arguing against your own positions as long as it lets you scream 'rabbit season' to my 'duck season' in contrarian glee. You mange clever and even charming often enough elsewhere on the boards that the contrast is striking. But at the point I'm starting to take perverse pride in it.

Personally I think it is a mistake moving to consoles. The PC crowd is already feeling neglected, so I can only imagine the neglect to come. They may decide to drop the PC version and just allow the consoles to supply their paychecks. They could save money by shutting their servers down because Microsoft and Sony run their own servers. Consoles cannot easily be botted or software modded. I fully understand they are looking at getting away from working as hard, eliminating jobs, and making a ton of cash.
So why do I say it is a BIG mistake?
I am 50 years old and don't plan to buy a console. I have an old Wii kicking around the house, but I don't use it. Why do I want to buy a PS4 or XB1 just to have them make the next best thing in a few years? They will be catering to an elite few. My nephew who is 18 and works a job just bought the latest CoD game for the XB1. People who play these consoles, still go to the store and buy $60 games and pay XB Live monthly fees to play "blood sports" this is NOT Star Trek. I asked my nephew about his opinion and his answer, "Free games are not worth the effort, they are a waste of your time." Cryptic cannot please the players of Halo, CoD, Killzone, Dead Space, etc.. They cannot compete in this market.
As for the advertisement... I am a Foundry author, I seldom "played" the game. My characters are Admirals and Generals now. They got there with duty officer missions. My sons kept telling me, "Mom this isn't suppose to be Farmville you know?!?" I got there without fighting so it can be done, just not very exciting. I only got into STO for the Foundry, for the last 90 days the Foundry has been shutdown in Neverwinter so I am back here until they decide to turn it back on or scrap it out.
My fear, and I keep it as far to the back of my mind as I can put it, is that with the ps4 and xb1 server they can say pc's are not worth the trouble and shut down holodeck. Similar to cutting out the mac access.

money comes from the pc gamers, they simply can't close the pc version.
The OP makes a valid point. This game is a Star Trek flavored MMO, not a Star Trek sim. So, advertise it as such. No one is asking Cryptic to remove combat from the game. I like the point made about Kirk, and how often he solved problems by thinking and talking instead of fighting. Picard was even more so. Think about it. What would Picard be in this game, Tactical, Engineer or Science? Neither, he was a Diplomat. He could do those other things quite well, but he used combat even less than Kirk. Personally, STO is my favorite game and I am going to keep playing it. However, I know at least one person in the real world who is leaving the game, because playing as Federation in STO doesn't feel like Star Trek. Anyone here ever play Knights of the Old Republic? In that game, if your charisma was high enough, you could used "influence" to talk through some NPC's instead of fighting them. Also, conversation options could actually change the story. Shouldn't there be even more of that in a Star Trek game?
Again, the OP was talking about changing the advertising, and I will keep playing STO as is. However, if Cryptic wanted to make some changes, then I would suggest three things, starting with the easiest. First, make more missions like discovering New Romulus, but without the token bad guys and token combat scenes. Maybe throw in some diplomacy themed missions, or even missions with Q. Second, give at least some bad guys a diplomacy option, instead of mandatory combat. Along with that, make conversation choices actually affect the outcome of the mission. Diplomacy (and even some science) options should also provide rewards. In fact, if the rewards were good enough, you would soon have even the most aggressive players going after them, even if only with alts. Third, create a new class; the diplomat. (See my comments about Picard above.) Diplomats would have better crew (read: better Boffs and Doffs), would be more likely to influence the mission affecting conversations mentioned above, and diplomats would be more likely to call in favors from admirals. This could translate into support and reinforcements, a one time discount on gear or even a ship. Maybe a diplomat could have a command ability that enhances abilities their Boffs already have.
Note that everything I've mentioned above would be optional. If you wanted to play like Picard, you could choose to do those things. If you wanted to keep playing like a typical MMO *ahem* excuse me, if you wanted to play like a Klingon, you could also do that. Again, I am going to keep playing this game. Cryptic has done a great job giving us a Star Trek flavored MMO, and it is currently my favorite game. However, some players are leaving because they want it to be more of a Star Trek sim. I think the above suggestions would make said players happy, without taking anything away from anyone else.
The only time the game wasn't heavy on the pew, pew, pew, is when you did the Exploration Missions and they killed those.
A considerable amount of those missions were also just pew pew. Regular story missions have about as much non-combat content as exploration missions. But less Borg Dynasty artifacts.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

My character Tsin'xing
It's true. When they weren't they were 'scan random thing'.
And even when they were "scan random thing" there sometimes were still enemies standing around waiting to shoot at you for no reason.
Let's face it, those "exploration" missions were just plain bad.
