(You lot cause far more activity than people who were actually posting about the thread topic. I don't see that this does any harm; it's not re-starting a squabble, it's not old enough to be out-of-date information and it's still interesting to anyone it was ever going to be interesting to.)

    Laptop:
    • Windows Vista Home Premium
    • 4GB RAM (of which only 2.87GB is accessible, because it's a 32-bit OS and apparently there's a maximum on how much they can use)
    • Intel Core2 Duo 2GHz CPU
    • No GPU
    • Western Digital Scorpio WD2500BEVS 250GB HDD (115GB of which is taken up by an excessively huge recovery-disk partition, I've never bothered to find out if anything can be done about that since there's still plenty of space left)

I think this is about the lower limit of what can run STO. Mainly because the poor little thing is at about the lower limit of what can run Windows Vista; there's no room for anything else ambitious on top of that. I have to have all the graphics settings turned down to minimum, and even then it still creaks. (It's not just my Internet, you can see it if, for instance, you try to start Notepad while STO is running - the computer will jam for several seconds). When I have more time, I'd like to see what it can do running Linux, which is a lot less demanding than Vista, even the fancier versions. I did once get as far as making a LiveDVD (bootable disk) of Zorin Linux 9 and trying that out, and it STILL ran noticeably faster than Windows Vista, even though it was running from a DVD! Didn't try STO on that occasion.

I never usually know anything much about the reasons for why things go crazy on the forums, that's the nature of trolls. I only suspect.
