What was the point of the pre patch last week?

I pre patched STO last week 6GB, now I still have to download a 6GB patch. That's pretty pointless. So I won't be able to play STO today. Hopefully I can still claim my daily promo item tomorrow...

I'm assuming the pre-patch lessened the download you would have to do today. That's what happens in most games. I would rather have two weeks of half sized downloads than one huge one any day.

It showed 3GB to download right now (I pre-patched), but 2GB of that patched in without me downloading anything (I have a network monitor software), and the remaining 1GB is currently being downloaded. I think it is like smart patching or something where it only downloads any changes they made to the patch since the prepatch.

Edit: Okay I'm fully patched now. Only took about 10min, but the client actually only downloaded 561mb. I guess that was why it was so quick. So yes prepatching really does cut patching time down.

A 12GB patch for STO, I don't think so. The whole game is about 17GB.

I also pre patched, and a 6GB patch is till downloading. I don't know, a little consistency would be nice.

Glad it went smoothly for you :)

Just checked, and I always have on-demand patching on, so that is why I've downloaded less. I think that means it patches in game as needed. I unchecked it and now it is showing 4GB to download. Not a problem as the server isn't even up yet.

It says patched but what you download is the received part. The prepatch was applied so you didn't actually download all that today. What you downloaded last week was put in a folder to be applied today.

The 6GB total is the file when decompressed, not what is downloaded. If you pre-patched last week, you'll already have the majority of the files already and they won't re-download. All the system does is transfer those files into the main directory. Anything that does come down are patches, which will always be less than what is shown.

Sure, but like others have said - I did the pre-patch a few days ago. And it looks like it's downloading again here... my network activity widget is showing a reasonably steady ~1.3MB inbound stream. And the patch/launcher has been chugging away for close to an hour now. 89% done.

(Here's a thought - what launcher are everyone using? I don't have Arc at all, I just use the regular STO launcher....)

The point of the pre-patch was to do exactly what it stated. A pre-patch. In my case, I showed a couple of minutes ago that I needed to download 6GB again. After a couple of minutes I hit 25% at which point it jumped to over 90% in 1 second. The pre-patch helped me along.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Yeah, that's what it was supposed to do. But, at least in my case, it hasn't. There's been an active download stream for an hour, and it hasn't jumped in completion percentage. Certainly seems like it's downloading again. /shrug

Same here with launcher type but I only received a few megs and didn't take nearly that long.

I am using Steam with the STO launcher. My download today completed hours ago. It took maybe ~30 minutes. FWIW FYI.

I'm using the regular launcher, but I don't use the prepatch as it rarely works for me, instead I test on tribble and keep it up to date, as a result the launcher just transfers the files from my tribble install into the main install, and just downloads the small changes between the two, about 67 Mb at time of posting.

Well, it finished, so now it's time for 3.5GB of Division patching. Hooray for piles of games putting out updates the same day! :)

That was something too. As he said here, I have been on Tribble recently to see if the "you can create your same as before" was really true or not.

if you use On Demand Patch then you only DL 3+ gigs. If you do the full patch you need to DL 6+ gigs. Also the prepatch helps some but not much... from the time the prepatch goes live, the game is still being updated and fine tuned before it goes live so you still need to re-DL it but on theory not as much... LOL

They say it's better if you have a copy of the Test Server game since that is the most up to date version of the game...

Course this all depends on your bandwidth... I am on basic DSL (yay AT&T, no Google Fiber =( here) so I never play the same day a major patch goes live.

I have so far, downloaded 28Gigabytes, but the remaining 139Mb required for the patch, still won't complete. I have stopped and started it several times and its been at it for hours.

Game is only 15 Gb in size, so no idea where your getting 28 from.

I know this, never the less, the launcher stated that it had recieved 28 gigabytes (I let it run for an entire day), yet it shows Patched 131.5MB/139MB while received was 28915.MB - 94%

    I will restart it again

The whole game is 17-18GB, you've almost loaded the whole game twice, or today's season 11 patch almost 5 times over.

Pre-patching downloads the games files and sets the on a different folder for later use...come launch day the launcher moves the files over from that folder to the main....

    Also don't confuse

Patched and Receive.... THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!

patched - the size of the files beign patched
Received - what you ACTUALLY HAVE downloaded

If you pre-patched you should see a patch size of 6GB but only have had downloaded a relatively smaller amount 0MB - 1GB or so...

I haven't patched the game as of me typing this comment.
I pre-patched last week. So in theory I will only have to download less than a 1GB of data or so....

    Let's see.

I guess I will find out how much I will be downloading tonight after I get home from work.

With regard to the pre-patch. I have STO installed on a laptop and a desktop. One had a 3GB download while the other had a 6GB download. Go figure.

You have on demand enabled on the one that downloaded the 3GB patch size.

Under options at the top of the client do you have anything ticked for patching?

There's no way the launcher downloaded 28GB.. The game itself is 6GB with on demand enabled and ~15GB with it off

Ok, after checking the launcher, nothing is ticked under patching. I restarted the download and once again it is barrelling past what was needed to finish patching. ... This is what it looks like now .. http://share.pho.to/A5kES/w2/original

Yeah force verify should sort it out. Maybe something got corrupted.
