Unifying/Overriding Weapon Visuals/Audio?

alphahydrialphahydri Member Posts: 391 Arc User
Seeing as with Season 11.5 fashion and function will become separated with regards to space gear, can we see the same thing happen for weapon visuals and audio too?

There are a lot of different weapon types in the game, each with its own special procs and appearances (for the most part). The last bunch of Featured Episodes have even introduced unique, set-bound weapons that only allow one of them to be equipped. The same applies for reputation weapon sets. That said, having the ability to unify the visual appearance of my weapons or even override the visuals of one weapon type with those of another would make Space Barbie even more fun for the playerbase.

Imagine having a full set of Antiproton weapons equipped but having them appear as Phasers, or having all of your standard Disruptors look like Resonant Disruptors. Tetryon visuals with Disruptor procs, Plasma visuals with Polaron procs, the possibilities are endless! Applying this visual override or visual unification to sound effects would be a welcome addition as well, as it can allow us to replace, say the standard Polaron sound effects for those of Phasers and vice versa.

This change can also be applied to torpedoes as well. Allowing all of your standard Transphasic torpedoes to look like Resonant Transphasic torpedoes, or having your Neutronic Torpedo look like a regular Quantum torpedo are just a couple of examples of this. Like with energy weapons, being able to swap out the audio would also enhance the Space Barbie experience, and make the system overall more complete and immersive for players.

Personally, I want my Quantum Phasers to look and sound like standard Phasers for the sake of uniformity and canon integrity, and a change like this would make that possible for me. I would also love to use some of the more exotic torpedoes in the game, but being the Purist I am, I refuse to use anything that doesn't look like a normal Photon or Quantum torpedo on my Starfleet ships. This change would alleviate my issue, and I'm sure many others' as well.

Implementing a system like this will do what I wish all video games would do, and that is divorce aesthetics from performance entirely. Allowing players to fully customize every aspect of their characters and the items (in this case, ships) that they use the whole time they play will make it that much easier for people to immerse themselves in their characters. It pains me to see others in STO feel like they're "gimping" themselves by using Phasers or Tetryon over Antiproton weapons purely because they like the visuals and sound effects more or vice versa. I believe player customization should never come into conflict with gameplay performance in any game, as choosing between whether you want your character to look like how you want them to look and making sure they can still perform well in-game can be an incredibly difficult thing to balance.

I'm not sure how much development time would be needed to implement a system like this, or if it is even possible to implement in STO, but given the recent unveiling of ship visual overrides, I have hope that it is possible! So what do you think? Would you like to see something like this added to STO, or do you feel the game is better off without it? Please share your thoughts below! Thanks for reading! /walloftext

If they do indeed add the ability to pick your mods when upgrading weapons I will be mostly satisfied. My only other issue is one-off weapons like mission rewards, I often love the visuals and want them on more stuff.

I'd be happy with just being able to pick the visuals and audio from any one of the equipped beams or cannons / turrets and apply it to the rest, similar to the "unify colors" feature for costumes in other MMOs.

Because of episodes, I have mixed types of phasers, polarons, tetryons, disruptors on different characters' ships, and several also use the Omega rep Kinetic Cutting Beam. I'd really like to be able to stop seeing a mismatch between beams.

OP, something like that was enabled in the game when STO launched in 2010. It was on energy weapons though. Within a day or two of the game launching, Cryptic killed that function.

This, together with the ship visuals is probably one of the most requested things in game. I can't think of any real problem with the idea as even for PVP (whatever the hell that is :D ) you can barely tell a persons energy type with all the fancy reward weapons shooting random colours.
And who seriously can remember every single colour/type combo when they are busy getting shot at.

I'd like to see it come back.

That was actually unintentional, and purely a result of sharing code with CO. The power color selection feature from CO was accidentally turned on in STO at launch.
