Bad Reviews or Trolls?

rickysmith1rickysmith1 Member Posts: 610 Arc User
Now let me start by saying that I love foundry with a passion and that I know I am not the greatest at creating.
Given that I am English (different spelling) and have a strong accent it can be hard enough, so I exspect some critism.

But...

Have you ever got those few people that give you unfair or illogical reviews to the point of trolling?

For example; I created a popular mission and mostly good reviews, a few creative critisms, a few general dislikes. Then theres comments like "Don't like time travel storys" or "BAD DON'T PLAY", and my favourite "My game froze and I lost interest"... I mean really?
Bare in mind these are the nicer less aggrevating comments.

Anyone else had these sort of headache inducing individuals messing up their Zen?

I find it's more amusing when you question some of them ... my favorite encounter went like this

'The mission is to hard, the initial enemy group was too hard to kill and im using a decked out Nicor.' ('Death at Mol'Rihan')

My mail to X 'The fighter group?'

    X: '<naughty words.>' X has ignored you.

yeah, you can get some reviews that are just mental...

"Kazon don't trade, they just steal." Actually they were shown to trade in the TV show... Not all the Kazon were as bloodthirsty as the Ogla and Nistrim sects.

I find them more amusing than anything else. I don't actually care what they say. I just make the missions cos I need a creative outlet and if anyone has my taste they can enjoy. Once I release a mission I don't tend to follow it's 'progress'. I have to move on to the next thing. My last best review that gave me a smile was:
"Runing from place to place and from place to another place just to go to the next place. Go and kill your self"
    Haha. Awesome.

Good reviews make you happy. Make you feel you did good. Bad reviews, just shrug dude and say 'well, the mission wasn't made for ppl with your taste' and carry on.

Just watch for the bug related ones.

Perfect example: The Godfather movies. I think i managed about half an hour of one before i had to turn it off. Just didn't get anything out of it personally. Just not my bag. But i can't take anything away from an award winning critically acclaimed film by saying "stopped playing halfway thru cos bored"

Yeah, it's amazing how much people can say without really saying anything. I've got a few reviews where it's a full paragraph that doesn't tell me anything about what the reviewer actually disliked.

    What everyone above has said.

You do get some bad reviews, where someone does explain what they didn't like, but in a constructive manner. Then you get the ones who pan your mission because they couldn't find the start point. I had one guy recently give me a bad review on a mission because he said the mission sucked because his weapons were TRIBBLE and he died over and over again. The thing was, he was fighting Orion mobs, which are pretty low level compared to The Borg or The Iconians. So, from what I got from this, was that he was being killed over and over by the STO equivalent of a slime from Dragon Quest (for any of you old school gamers out there).

I did have one player that gave me a one-star because I gave one of his missions a less than favorable review. That was the most petty thing I had ever seen in the review comments.

At the end of the day, sometimes you have to carry on and realize that you can't please everyone.

I understand that feeling. One of our fleet members created a foundry mission specifically to help train less experienced members to deal with multiple Borg threats such as those found in the original Borg STF's. And despite notes being included in the mission description for the mission to be ran with at least a 3 man team and what the initial idea was behind it, I saw reviews complaining that it was pointless and was way to hard even on normal, let alone the elite setting the author had originally intended. Personally I wouldn't take the negative comments to heart. Focus on the positive ones and don't let them dissuade you from doing more. Because some of the best content I've come across in game is from the foundry authors.
Oh, it's not broken? We can soon fix that!

I've said before, I'm a player not a critic. I'll write a review in the box at the end, but it's going to be general, not an in-depth breakdown of why I didn't (or did!) like a mission. I want to reply to this part specifically, though:
[...] my favourite "My game froze and I lost interest"... I mean really?

I know I've left reviews like that before. Why? Because when you drop a Foundry mission, the review window pops up. I'll put my thoughts on the mission down up to that point if I don't feel like playing through it again. That's not trolling, that's just an honest opinion, and you got 100 dilithium out of me anyway unless the mission was really bad.

I have to say I am both relieved and revitalised to read your comments.

Relieved to know that I am not the only one dealing with these... less than enjoyable characters.

Revitalised by your attitudes towards them. My weakness is letting some of them get to me and loosing interest.

Yeah anytime you're in the business of releasing a creation upon the public, rule 1 is grow thick skin. Even the most highly acclaimed works get haters. It is literally impossible for everyone to have good things to say about something.
Knowing this, it's easy for me to say 'You didn't like my mission, huh? Well, it wasn't made for you.'

The only opinions i care about outside of me being happy with it, are the opinions of my peers. Those being you guys here in this forum. The fellow creators of story-based missions who care about the Foundry. Everything else is gravy.

The only thing I'll say here is that some reviews are more about the reviewer than about the mission. Those I pay attention to are those that try to engage with the mission open and honestly.

OH WOW, I just checked each of the one-star reviews I got for my mission... not a single one has published a foundry mission.

    Now I am pissed off.

Don't dwell on it too much. You're going to have a lot of people who don't understand the ins and outs of the Foundry editor or the creative process. And there are the rare brain donors or trolls whom we're not sure if they're on a fourth-grade reading level that will dump on your stuff (who are fortunately far and few between). As a former supervisor use to say, "It's the nature of the beast."

On another note, I was going through Youtube earlier today and found this. I felt it was relevant to the subject of this thread, with the exception of the crowdfunding aspect.
