So I have some concerns regarding the new skill system and a possible solution.
Now anyone who has gone through the new system on Tribble has already figured out that every point in the new system works out to roughly 3 pips in the old system. That can be used as a rough basis for transitioning your old builds to the new system, an example of such looks kind of like this;
Current Build (old system)
9/9/9/0/9
9/0/9/0/0
................
9/6/9/5/3
0/0/9/6/4
9/9/9/5/6
................
9/0/0/0/0
9/9/0/0/0
Current Build (new system)
3/2 3/3 3/0
1/3 3/0 3/3
3/3 0/2 0/0
1/1 0/0 3/3
3/0 0/0 0/0
Now I'm only paying attention to the space portion as its the only thing thats really going to matter here and ya its been simplified but at the same time it doesn't feel like it. Our drain/control abilities got packed into 2 separate skills, thats awesome but then their are some really questionable things.
Their used to be 2 skills governing hull and 2 skills governing shields with regard to heal/regen rate and capacity now their are 3 and 3... Heal rate, regen rate and capacity all separate... Ok didn't simplify anything their, all it did was create a skill point dump, what would have been a simple 6 and 6 max skill point investment is now 9 and 9 to get the same maxed out rate.
The crit hit/dmg skills, fixed it so they apply to any weapon but then it got split again so what was 2 skills that could have just been 1 is now 2 again.
The previously low entry requirement for the warp core skills? Gated, ok so now you need 35 points or more on the new system.
A bunch of old/redundant skills are gone, which will help new players and they added new goodies that look enticing but a direct build transfer is not going to open up the flexibility to try any of them let alone the Ultimates without significant changes to a persons existing build. Now the Ultimates are an interesting idea but they are gated to an extreme rate, 25 points in a single class with the possibility to add up to 3 more boosts to it totaling 28 points in all, which is a lot when you consider you only get 46 points to spend on space. This wouldn't be so bad but if want to get a particular ultimate your going to spend points on things that will likely never apply to your build. A beam/cannon boat for example will be spending points in either torps or hanger pets to get the base ultimate, want the full ultimate and your putting points in torps and hanger pets, which sucks if you never use those. This also applies to the "earned" passive abilities, most of them are helpful but some of them are going to seem like wasted choices especially in the Tactical path, at 5 points you get to chose between projectile critical hit or dmg, ok that does you no good if you don't use torps/mines, at 15 points you get to choose between stealth (practically useless for Fed characters) or threat scaling (not particularly useful either), at 20 points... hanger pet buffs... really? Not to mention locking the creation of skill manuals of other classes behind other classes so now you'll need 17 points in science to unlock BFAW3 or 12 points in engineering to unlock AP:B3... But thats another issue in and of itself.
So to fix some of these things I propose the following; roll Hull Resto and Damage Con back into 1 skill, do the same for Shield Resto and Shield Regen. Move the Warp Core skill to old Dmg Con spot, move the Shield Mastery to the old Shield Regen spot. Roll Weapon Amp and Weapon Spec into 1 skill, move Coord Proto into the old Weapon Amp spot.
Drop the barrier of entry for the Ultimates by 4 points, this will dramatically reduce the chance that you spend lots of points in "useless" skills while opening up the chance to experiment with utilizing some of the new skills while still requiring a dedicated skill focus for a given Ultimate. This helps simplify things further while opening up a bit more freedom without the need to "give us more points".
Also as a "quality of life" improvement, can the way the points are spent be changed? Having to confirm - every - single - point - spent - gets - a little - annoying, especially if you have lots of points to spend and it also doesn't allow you to change your mind on a given setup before confirming, make a mistake and your spending/buying a token or screwed.
