Leave them as they are. I'm a lifetime subscriber, have been for years.
One of the perks I get for being a lifetime subscriber is that every time I level I get a free Skill respec token.
If this was to be removed as one of my perks, what would you replace it with?
If the issue is that you're having issues experimenting with a build, do what I do and what a lot of other players do: Copy your character to Tribble and mess with your skills there, find what works and then make the respec on Holodeck. Don't make a Vet/LTS benefit free to the general playerbase.
blocking other from benefits, so your benefits stay exclusive to you, is one of the big problems in this world, whether its virtual or real goods.
Nope. I worked, saved, stopped buying Zen, in order to afford a Lifetime sub. It's not wrong for me to want to preserve the benefits that come with it, else I might as well just as PWE for a refund. Heck, while we're giving away the respec tokens, let's give away the Vet ships...and sure, may as well give away the EC cap, the account bank, the additional dil refining cap, the inventory slots...
But my previous point stands. If you want to try out a build/skill setup, but don't want to shell for a respec, then there's always Tribble.
If you really think the free respec is a huge part of the lifetime sub, then you seriously overvalue respecs. As I said above in my reply to your earlier message, I haven't used a single one of mine in the 6 years I've been a lifer, the only bonuses I care about are the ones that are actually worth a damn: playable borg, the stipend, and the vet ships.
you may start to value respecs higher if you ever have to cough up your stipend to buy one, or will you be like me set it and forget it.
i am also a lifer and have no problem with allowing other players who would like to experiment a certain amount of free respecs every now and then say one every month or two.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

My builds will vary by character to a certain degree, but otherwise I'm just going to set it once and forget about it. I usually have a unique plan for each character and build around that:
My Delta is full on dominion and flys a Jem'Hadar strike ship with polaron weapons and plasmonic leach, so she'll have the drain skill
My fed tac goes back and forth between a T6 Akira and a Hestia w/ MVAM console, so he'll have the pet skills
My sci is my space sorcery character, so she'll have lots of sci stuff
My eng is a boring beamboat cruiser captain, so he'll have a generic build
So for me, respecs aren't very valuable, and I'd really like to see them cost ingame currency line every other game, preferably a scaling amount of EC (again like almost every other game), 100 at level 1, 100k at 50, we could use the EC sink anyway

the sad part is in the live stream they specifically indicated that they want players to experiment and try different things and this is just not going to happen if we have to pay every time we respec, on the other hand I can understand why they don't want us to respec at the drop of a hat, that is why I suggest a good middle ground would be a monthly or bi monthly free respec with a time limited use window to stop players hording.
any players who want to respec more often would still be able to buy extra regular respecs to use as they please.

That sounds good, but in STO this is mostly done in the ground part of the game. And we're seeing the opposite thing happening here: more universal kit modules, certain skills like vascular regenerator or shield regenerator becoming available to all careers (and those will likely be more useful outside their 'standard' career now that things like Medic, Modification specialist etc. have been removed and replaced with 'kit effectiveness' or something like that) etc.
It seems to me that, sadly, we won't see more distinction between different careers, quite the opposite is happening in fact. That's why I would prefer to at least keep what little distinction we have now.
For the record, this is a very common, almost universal, occurrence in aging MMO's. As the game gets older and older, the class distinctions become more and more blurred and homogenised. Everybody gets to do a little of everything, and specialisation dies. In some games, such as Anarchy Online, this can cause certain classes to become almost useless, and consequently little valued.
With the new skill tree on the way, and with a few loads of feedback being provided about respec tokens, more or less curious as to where people sit with this.
Make it cost dilithium or some other in-game currency instead or make it even FREE.
Decrease its zen cost (Optional: specify the amount your thinking it should be instead)
Free would be nice but i doubt that will happen so I'll go with lowering the price.
$1 each or 6 for $5
I would love to play with different ships and layouts but I am not about to spend $5 every time I want to try something just for fun.

They should be free. I remember reading a post concerning the skill revamp and one of the stated goals was "experimentation". How do you experiment with builds when it costs 500 Zen to respec? If I was the tin hat type I'd think they are trying to cash in on respec tokens.

I don't consider myself a tin hat type, and I do think that.
But yeah, either the system has missed its goals by a huge margin, or those goals are not what was advertised. Seeing as I don't perceive the Cryptic dev team as daft enough not to independently figure out what we've been pointing out, the latter does seem to be at least partly true.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.

You're essentially suggesting they'll sell less respec tokens than they otherwise would. They'll never do that.
You know, I'm curious... what's this latest signature of yours about? I understood the 'eating crow' stuff, but I don't have any context for this one.
Hehe; "Your fun isn't wrong!" is what Trendy said in a recent livestream. It rang particularly true to me, and served as a good reminder to myself to just have fun and fly the way I want, and not be so worried about DPS and such.

It's an awesome pic in the sig btw, ive always secretly wished they'd add those old pre-cryptic ship designs as playable.
Perhaps I'm in the minority, in that I don't like the multiple respect options. I chose "keep it as it is" because once a skill is learned, it shouldn't be possible to un-learn it... You make a bad choice, either make a different choice with your next point, or decide to adjust your future plans and work with the choice that you did make.
Years ago, I studied Computer Science in college. I spent time and money on those courses. When, later, I came to realize that, despite my love for computers, I won't want to do it for a living... I changed my major. I will never get those lost hours or dollars back. I will never lose that knowledge. I simply have it sitting there, in the back of my brain, and moved on to something else (in my case, English Education).
If I had my way <insert "Perfect World" pun here>, the numbers behind the game would be invisible to players. Characters would pick ships, skills, equipment, traits, abilities, etc. based solely on their in-game "fluff" description because it makes sense for the character's story. My Fed character, for example: Graham chose to put more ranks in Warp Core Potential than he did in "Attack Patterns", not because I (the player) wanted Graham to have those bonuses... but because Graham is an Engineer and it simply makes more freaking sense than the reverse.
But... since I won't have my way, my reasoning for "keep it as it is" is simply, to do otherwise encourages min-maxing while simultaneously discouraging role-play and immersion... and I hate min-maxing munchkin power gamers with the fiery passion of Khan's last breath!

Your proposal reminds me of when I made my first Diablo 2 character, did the grind all the way to max level, then found out that I had created a horribly underpowered character and had to start all over if I wanted a semi decent one.
You DO realize people pay for this game, frequently for extremely rare character bound ships and gear, right?
Decrease its zen cost (Optional: specify the amount your thinking it should be instead)
I say reduce its Zen cost, but still have it cost Zen. Maybe 250.
I agree with several people here. Yes when you skill you should be able to expirement, but also you shouldnt be able to swap every 5 seconds with no consequences or costs that should become very high if you try it.
You DO realize people pay for this game, frequently for extremely rare character bound ships and gear, right?
Of course... that's why I don't create those ubiquitous "Cryptic sucks because they don't do what I want" threads. I'm perfectly fine with my underpowered, story-driven, canon-centric characters. I receive more pleasure out of developing a character's story that has depth and personality than I do out of having a high DPS score. Not everyone agrees, and that's fine... because I pay money for this game too.

unfortunately the game is not like real life, you do not keep the skills you have learned when you learn new skills with a respec other skills are lost as a consequence so your analogy doesn't really apply as you do un-learn your skills.
despite the fact that you do not use your learned knowledge of computers to earn a living you may still benefit from them at some point in the future, if real life was like the game all that you had learned would have been wiped from your mind so you could never benefit from it in any way.
perhaps if that were the case you might not have been so keen to change your major knowing that all you had learned previously would be totally removed from your mind as a consequence.

I'm not talking about shooting for high DPS, in the case of the Diablo character I mentioned I literally couldn't do anything on the highest difficulty because my poorly built character just died, no matter what. It just plain wasnt usable, and that's what would happen if new players were permanently locked into their skill selections.
I voted "make them free". The skill tree is essential to you're character. Its a core part of the game. Its the difference between going into combat with no gear equipped compared to having gear equipped.
One of the reasons thrown around about having a skill revamp was to bring a better diversity of builds. But this will not happen as fine tuning you're character and playing with different builds to create or experiment with is blocked behind a "Pay Wall".
Basically after the dust settles and the DPS guys find the right path in the skill tree and share that info, other than changes to powers Nerfs or Buff's depending if you're Tact or Science, nothing else will as players won't be experimenting and trying new things as "Pay Wall"
