Gold fleet isn't so epic an adventure

Going gold as invisioned by STO is a crafting goal we should all attempt to attain. But flying all gold starships in the space battles of the repeat episodes is kind of boring. And flying a new ship not epic equiped seams really dumb, as its a huge waste of time to get the same rewards. What is the point of upgrading ships, if tier 7 is only a few years away and replaying episodes get even more boring?

if tier 7 is only a few years away

We're all going to die. It's what we do until then that matters.

I don't fly anything that's completely Epic. It's far from dumb. I just finished setting up a Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser (looks like Picard's Stargazer) using the new Chroniton bits and pieces (minus the torp because I just can't bear Omega farming) and using one of the Rep sets, and it's the most fun I've had lately. It turns like an escort but has the durability of a cruiser, and that suits my style of play. (Heli gunship or aero-dogfight.) Just because the gear isn't Epic doesn't mean I'm not having fun, and that's the whole point of this, right?

Well tier 7 ships aren't here yet....so what are you going to do in the meantime? Might as well get something 'fun'.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.

Epic helps, but it's not needed. Yes, repeating the same episode over and over again gets boring, so that's why I take a break from the game from time to time. What would help is if they made the foundry more searchable. I think I saw a post the other day saying that there's over 90k player made missions in there. Now, how many of them are good is debatable, but overhauling how missions are found would help immensely.

Hmmm, only now (16 months on from DR!) am I even approaching having ships with full sets of epic gear... honestly have never seen the need for it, it's just because I've finally settled on some general purpose builds I like. Epic has always been a luxury, like lockbox ships, it's certainly not needed. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Only epic items I have are ones that came that way. I have exactly 1 item (a singularity core) that has been upgraded at all (to UR), to see how it worked. It wasn't worth it. Game's too easy.

Mk12 purples are more than enough to curbstomp all the so-called challenges this game has to offer. Would be dumb to waste resources just to stack up even more overkill.

    May I simply say: amen.

Epic is far from a necessity in this game, not even close. It's a goal to strive for if you're doing parsed runs and trying to push every last percent out of your performance, but even in VR gear you'll absolutely curb stomp normal content. UR quality is massive overkill in story missions and more then enough for even Elite Qued missions.

Unless you're pushing for every last drop of possible DPS then trying to get everything Epic is really just a massive sink for dilithium and crafting materials. Now if you're crafting your gear and starting at Mark II then you can get to Epic pretty easily using the Omega Kits and Research Boosts, but otherwise it's cost is not worth it for most players. If you're not parsing runs and trying to push every last percentage point of performance, you really don't need to worry about getting everything (or really anything) to Epic.
    Insert witty signature line here.

If you want a challenge then fly cannon builds.

    U.S.S. Defiant
    Quad Phasers (fore)
Quantum Torpedoes (4 fore, 2 aft)
Phaser Array (1 fore, 1 aft)
    Ablative Armor
    Cloaking Device
    Chaffee Shuttle

    U.S.S. Deviant
    Quad Phasers (fore)
Quantum Torpedoes (3 fore, 2 aft) With one DOff that reduces torp CD those 3 fore torps act like 4.
Omni-Directional Phaser (1 aft) 360 degrees makes it act like 1 fore, 1 aft.
Console - Engineering - Ablative Hull Armor replaced with Prototype Ablative Jevonite Hardpoints.
    Cloaking Device
    Type-10 (Chaffee) Shuttle
    Belfast Bridge
Tachyon Deflector Array as the picture matches the Defiant's deflector array (it's nose section)
Hyper Injection Warp Coe as the item image matches the Belfast Bridge's Warp Core.

The first Belfast was commanded by Captain Ve'Kal Shon until its destruction in 2409. A new ship was commissioned bearing the same name and registry as special dispensation to then newly promoted Captain Edward XIII for his pivotal role during the renewed Dominion War.

All my weapons are Epic quality (I bought them as Epic at a lower rank then upgraded them, its "cheaper") but aside form that I only have a couple epic consoles that I got a lucky quality upgrade on as I was upgrading their rank, all other consoles are at least Ultra or Very Rare but there is not much point upgrading to Epic.

There is this handy chart that shows you all, except Terran Task Force, of the reputation and Lobi stuff at epic quality, showing what new affix they get when upgraded and if its worth it. Usually it's not but there are some gems but most of it can be obtained in an easier way though alternate equipment.

The journey to all Epic is long and expensive and its literally just about squeezing every little bit of juice out of what you have equipped, its not needed seeing as even with just Very Rare quality stuff you can obliterate anything in front of you with the right build.
