Oculus Rift + STO

Has there been any dev comments or any idea to if STO is going to take advantage of OR (Oculus Rift) or any other VR tech?

This would be a good idea but. . .

It would require a entire revamp of maps etc as I'm pretty sure the game wouldn't support it.

    However I may be wrong.

Have you tried using Vireio Perception? I've not tried it with STO or Oculus Rift, but I've gotten it to work with some other games and my Cardboard setup.

It just seems the future for gaming...seems only logical to focus on it if it actually pans out.

How well would that work? It's great for FPS but I wouldn't think a third person ground/space slider-galore game like STO would be an early adopter. Considering the amount of time spent in reputation, doff and admiralty now given to you in VR glory! I think there are better areas for STO to branch into before VR. Consider voice commands. It is quite fun running STO with voice command software but they only map keys and every character on account has a different set of abilities differently mapped in space and ground. If they could build in voice command software pre-tied to tray powers so any character could say "attack pattern delta" and it would trigger it no matter where it was slotted, so long as they had it. Or "set course for K7" - which isn't something you could keybind but would be awesome to say as a voice command! Anyway, without going off topic- like I say, I think there are other areas that could play to STO's strengths than VR.

Yeah, I have to agree. For a text heavy game like STO I don't think it makes much sense to use an HMD, unless you want to strain your eyes. Even for FPS games where it adds to immersion, the state of "VR" at this time doesn't feel like much more than a novelty. Just like the previous push for VR and all of the HMDs that came out back in the 90s, it's something you try, say "oh cool" and then put away because it's just too much of a hassle and the practical benefit is non-existent. The gear that is coming out now is better than what we had back then, but it's still nowhere where it needs to be nor is it as affordable as it needs to be for mainstream adoption.

Ultimately adding stereoscopic output and a shader to handle screen warping for devices like Rift to a game's renderer isn't that big of a deal. I could see it *maybe* getting added to STO some time in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath. For anyone who really is interested, I would again refer them to the Vireio project.

Its not the future of anything, its a gimmick, like 3d movies were in the old days. It isn't a practical idea for anything that isn't an fps game and such a game needs to be designed from the ground up with the headset in mind for it to be practical to implement.

This is a third person game, the entire concept of an fps view doesn't work with this game in the space portion and most of the ground portion, it just isn't designed to support it effectively. Navigation and combat would be an absolute nightmare

Agreed, VR may be the new best thing for hardcore crowds craving absolute immersion, But I honestly don't see much of a future in it for casual gamers.
It also IMO has no future with MMORPG's and other games that benefit or require extensive keyboard use.

Why would they spend any effort at all to add special support for a peripheral no one has? Get real.
