I've been in like... three weeks. Last week a friend of mine crafted several plasma things (because I asked) and all have 'penetrating'. The thing is I've heard that having all of one kind of torpedo is a bad thing because same torps share a cooldown timer. Yet at the ame time mixing beam types is bad because energy consumption.
Clarification please?

While not your real question, I'll clarify this for ya...
Mixing energy weapons does not increase your energy consumption. Only the number of firing energy weapons does. Some people just misread how its stated. Your first energy weapon (of any type) fires for 'free', the 2nd one that fires draws 10 energy, the 3rd draws 10 more and etc. So if you fire 8 beams of any type at one time you will draw 70 energy. This makes the power level that the weapon damage is based off lower and they do less damage.
It's one reason why you'd have a torpedo in the mix since it would not draw energy so your average energy power would be higher than if that was another energy using weapon.
Why mixing beam types is 'bad' is that the consoles that buff weapon damage give a higher +% increase if you chose one that only affects 1 type. For example: If a Rare Phaser console gives +20% then the Rare 'All Beam' console gives +16% for the same Mark Level. Why? Cryptic thought it was the way to do it 6yrs ago and hasn't bothered to change it. (Maybe they thought the ability to proc the various secondary beam effects was a balance?)
Also, way back when, there were specific Energy Type skills you could put your XP into, on top of the All Energy Weapon skill levels. So you were really leaving DPS on the table if you didn't choose one energy type.
