I'm not saying it will happen any time soon, which is why I want people discussing now rather than two weeks before things go out when ther'es like five guys running everything and most of it in their spare time.
Battle Forge, City of Heroes? Need for Speed? There've been a lot of MMO's that have gone and died, and many other games that require servers existing for people to be able to play.
I am a major fan of Jason Scott and Archive Team (City of Heroes Archive,) and Ross Scott's stance on the whole thing.
Archive Everything.

Give us an option that isn't 'go TRIBBLE yourself.' For those that don't get the reference,
here's a youtube video where Ross (creator of Freeman's Mind) gives a detailed explaination.
See once the profit shrinks down to the point servers can't be run there will probably still be a very dedicated fanbase (We're trekkies after all. We practically invented the nerd con so far as I'm aware.) I'm very sure I'm a minority voice here as most people don't think of these things when things are going well and only consider 'what do we do?!' when it's a week before the plug is pulled and we found out because a response to a FAQ question posted in the help section buried six links deep.
I honestly think STO has a VERY long and productive life ahead of it, but I want there to be some discussion both at Cryptic and amongst the fans on what should happen.
Personally? There is enough here for a solid single player game that would be totally fine and playable offline with a little tweaking here and there. Nothing overly major in most cases, especially if there were lan play with one player acting as host for the others. I'd buy it. Bonus points if a few of the foundery missions get bundled in 'just because they're that awesome.'
That said 'it's just as simple as ripping out everythign serverside, have the client look for it on the same machine it's running on' yea... I'm sure that would be a nightmare to code up. Hence my wanting it discussed now when something could theoretically, however unlikely, be done that doesn't involve a bastardized fan patch that takes years of reverse engineering by basement dwelling geniuses to pull off. I mean again we're trekkies so I'm sure more than a few of us could pool resources and totally do that, but I would rather something less duct tape, bailing whire, and channeling Scotty to pull off.

... Wouldn't hold my breath if I were you...
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
My descendants will have to find some other way to chat with my avatar. Because it looks like this game's going to keep running for quite some time...
cryptic do not owe anyone an explanation if they plan on shutting their servers down, its in their agreement you signed that they can change the service however they like without telling you anything. meaning if they want to shut down the server they can do it suddenly or over a period of time or any other way they like to.
while the game has bugs and many of which are working as intended it seems, i still hope this game will last another 5 years at least. that would be a good run and show it was a success.
as far as converting it to single player? i doubt this very much. the emulation part has been covered.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

I'm not going anywhere, as I'm having way too much fun with my little torpedo boat of doom. I'm simply asking for discussion.
Pretty sure STO will last for a good long while given who we are as a fanbase. I just figure the discussion is worth having on the record.
This game isn't going anywhere any time soon.
@pwlaughingtrendy to the rescue .....
have to admit though this topic has been beaten so many times its a dead horse
