Thte Malem worth getting?

willdojinnwilldojinn Member Posts: 57 Arc User
Was considering grabbing the Malem not just for a ship upgrade from the T'varo refit (Upgraded) but also to complete the console set and get another bonus (wish it actually said what the bonus was in the screen... maybe it does and i'm just overlooking it.)

I got the Malem on my RomSci and used it briefly. Like the T'varo RF it is a pretty squishy ship -- you'd really need to take advantage of the enhanced battle cloak to make that a non-issue. I am not so sure how effective the red ball of doom is anymore. In this high DPS meta the slowness of the destabilized plasma torpedo is an issue, so I dropped that off of my build right away. However the Malem's console, with the shotgun spray of plasma torpedoes, was actually quite useful. Almost the same level of hilarity on unshielded targets as the isokinetic cannon.

Does the shotgun torpedo inheret the characteristics of the torps on your loadout? I ask because I've got three penetrating torps up front.

The one downside to the T'varo is just how squishy it is, and I've noticed how slow the red ball of fun is. However I tend to use it as a 'launch first then go into strafing around after popping Omega 3'.

Mildly hilarious to have the borg tell you that your weapons are useless... as their ships are blowing up.

I have it and love it. The squishiness can be counteracted by the Sol set, if needed.

I am interested in hearing more about this, like where to obtain.

The Sol Set can be obtained by doing the last mission of the Iconian War, Midnight.

It is a fantastic ship, I have one sci using it with the Sol set, and it survives a lot better than one would expect, and as a torp boat it puts out stupid levels of burst damage.

I have a second sci with it, who doesn't have all the bells and whistles yet (or the sol set) and it is considerably more squishy.

As a longtime T'Varo captain, I LOVE the Malem! The shotgun torpedo console is a lot of fun, and I still get plenty of mileage out of the Big Red Ball of Doom. (Hint: concentrate on gear and traits which maximize your torpedoes' speed, damage and survivability).

The squishiness is not much of an issue if you run the ship as a Torp/Mine boat and STAY cloaked. I frequently take 3rd or better place in CCA with mine, and almost never blow up.

The other nice thing is the Lt. Cmdr. Sci seat on the Fleet version. T'Varo + Gravity Well = a lot of exploding enemies.

The trait, however, is flat out useless for this ship. If you're running cannons on a T'Varo/Malem, you're missing out on the whole point of the ship. It should have been a trait to enhance torps, IMHO.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with the Malem/T6 Fleet T'Varo, and I hope you will, too!

I'm flying mine now as my current 'main' ship. It cuts the grass like militant leaf cutter ants. Powerful. You can really take advantage of Romulan and Borg sets with its Torpedo powers. I've just gotten around to crafting a three sixty plasma turret and wide arc heavy plasma cannon hardpoints.

This ship just keeps on giving. I love it.

Both my reman uses T'Varos and now the T6 ones. The first one is flown by my Tac reman and has a plasma built with neutronic torp, deadly uncloak alphas. The second is flown by a Sci reman in a pure torp/part gen built. Both make high dps numbers and I don't have that much difficulty staying alive in them. So you can say I love the T'Varo and will fly it for a long time still.

I have the faeht but still prefer the T'Varo
Jamal : Tactical space specialist. USS Bug Warrior and many others
    E'Mc2 : Science Reman torp T'Varo, deadly annoyance :P
Kunmal: Tactical fed Klingon, ground specialist, USS Kanewaga
Ka -tet Tier 5 fleet fully completed Starbase and fleet property

I got the pack and took the same weapon layout that I used on the T6 intel warbird and the pilot BFAW setup for levelling and was disappointed with the damage output.
This doesn't mean it is a bad ship - the point that I try to make is: it's a different play style to the ships I mentioned. If you plan on using this ship make sure you do include torps and mines - that's what the ship excells in (it does get 2 Torpedo consoles after all...)
As for the T'varo - I have no idea how often I blew myself up with that red torp :)

verdict: it'S a fun ship but it'll never be one of my high damage Output ships. It's more a fun ship :)
