Has there been a Peaceful Borg Assimilation?

The borg's 'lower your shields and prepare to be boarded' line. Does anyone at all, barring a fear induced 'maybe someone can rescue me and I don't want to die' lowering shields and powering down, actually willingly assimilate? Why do the borg make this demand if every species and race has more or less given them the middle finger?

I know the crew of Voyager did, but that was a case of having a way 'out' of being part of the collective. Pretty sure more than a few were out of mind-numbing terror. I just don't know of any that happened because 'being part of a hive mind sounds awesome! Sign me up.'

IIRC there was a story in Pocketbooks "Strange New Worlds" competition a few years back that dealt with this topic. It was a race that was dying out and they chose assimilation into the Collective as a means of preserving their experiences.

    That's an awesome story idea.

Holy TRIBBLE. I could so see that too. Better part of the swarm then to be totally forgotten save for people maybe digging up your pottery in a few millinia.

Well in some cases I could see it as a way for the Borg to let them know that the Borg aren't going to try to eradicate their species... just their culture..

Nothing on screen, obviously. I believe in the Vendetta Novel (that links the Planet Killer with the Borg) there was an AI that disabled all planetary defenses to allow the Borg to assimilate It (and incidentally, the people that it was supposed to protect from the Borg). That might not count exactly as peaceful, but it implies some species or entities might actually see assimilation as positive.
