if i can ignore something, I will with the points, but i tend to put points into weapons, shields and power supply related. science not so much, even though my rom is a science type
are romulan plasma better than normal plasmas? also does anyone know anything about the spiral wave plasma? i still like rainbows ^_^ (helps me to see how much is actually shooting at the enemy)
Umm...I've never had this issue but I stack traits rep traits and ship masters to give myself like 3k shields every 6 seconds I've never had a facing stay down for more than an instant and most enemies never breach my shields. However if you don't do this your shields will be crushed and will never come back up. (ALSO MY SHIELD POWER IS ALWAYS AT 125-175)

I used to use the rom plasma weapons, but I have replaced all of them (except the experimental beam). the 2 procs are less interesting than good mods. Now all my beams are normal plasma beams with crtd dmg Pen mods, and I have better results.
For dealing damage.. yes. Crafted Plasma Weapons are better then Romulan Plasma. Most players go for crafted beams with a combination of [Pen], [Dmg], and/or [CrtD] mods over reputation weapons that give up mods for a special 'proc.' The procs are ok, but less effective then the mods you sacrifice.
Alternatively, you can get Plasma beams from your fleet that come with [Dmg]x3 [CrtD] in Ultra Rare quality. They don't have the [Pen] Mod, but those are still very nice weapons and come in Ultra Rare without having to craft over and over trying to get the mods you want.

I suppose you could mix them to get slightly better stats, AND still have a chance at the Disruptor Breach.
Pretty much every MMO out there doesn't give you much of a clue on how the game mechanics work, period - there's no Blizzard-supplied WoW tutorial on how to kit yourself out for raiding. Even the most simplistic of MMOs like Marvel Heroes leave players in the lurch as to what to do once they cap out their characters' level. STO is really no different in that regard; if you want to know how to kit your end-game build out, you ask the other players what works for them and do what you can afford to do. with their guidance.
Note I am not saying that STO couldn't do with some better explanations on how its far, far too complex systems work - we all know that it could. I am saying that pointing at global flaws that exist in almost every MMO (like the lack of guidance at end game and the constant shifting of powers and abilities over time) and saying STO has it worse isn't really a fair assessment.
Oh, and by the way, a player who just asks around on chat in game in the right channels (like TTS or Public Service) will find out how to reach 10k+ DPS without spending a dime on the game. It's not hard to do with the free T6 ships equipped with player-crafted damage consoles and weapons upgraded with a combination of FE-supplied and player crafted upgrade kits. It just requires a little advice on what to do (which in the most basic sense is "use one type of weapon damage and fill your tac slots with the damage consoles that match it" - everything else is just gravy on your steak). STO does have some pay to win aspects, sure, but in the end you can easily do well enough that nobody will complain about you in a PUG with zero money down.
for your shield problem: I personally use the Aegis shield (on all my rom ships), I use also the valdore console, + the console "temporal disentanglement"

Several games I've played had no more explanation in-game than "read the tooltips".
There's corrosive plasma, but that's a lockbox weapon. there's also a special type of plasma that Roms get from one of there story missions. It's like regular plasma, but with a DoT that burns hotter and shorter.
That mission for those plasma weapons, though, ugh. 3 different systems where you face many waves of Elachi in space. I doubt that it's on anybody's list of most-enjoyable missions to replay up to 8 times. I know how bad it is because I did just that for my Romulan characters way back when. If you are willing to do so yourself, it's called Last Stand, in the Vengeance subcategory, and it awards Caustic Plasma Beam Arrays, Dual Beam Banks, Dual Heavy Cannons or Turrets up to Mk XI.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.
dont you have allies in that one? if it is i found it easy, i just let the allies start fighting then come in and pound on the closest guy then fly away defiant style (had 3 dual cannons at the time) what about omni beams? is there only 3? rep ones and 2? mission reward ones? and a crafted one right? meaning i could have 3 omni on a ship right?
you can use only 1 omni beam for each energy; except for Antiproton and Tetryon, you can use 2 omni for them (rewards from missions), + of course the kcb
These days, I only even equip shields for the set bonus. Shield drains and [PEN] modifiers have severely curtailed the usefulness of a shield array. Better to just pile on the hull heals and armor.

You get some fighter wings on the last map as allies. The station launches a batch as each wave approaches, but they are NPC fighters taking on Monboshes and S'golths, so they tend not to last long. It's doable, but time-consuming, and can be a bit frustrating if you aren't used to Elachi space trickery.
