Qa'Tel Flight Deck Raptor

tousseautousseau Member Posts: 1,484 Arc User
Looking for some advice here on the Qa'Tel, as I'm considering on getting it for my Orion tac character.

Can anyone provide some insight on how it handles??

Right now, the uni Lt Com seems like a bonus, but that Ensign tac seat is feeling a bit meh.

Entire ships seems like a gimmick ship to me. a fighter hanger bay on a small ship like that. so one fighter wing, not really much help. look into the science pilot raptor i doubt it will disappoint you.

The biggest difference between the t5 qin and the Qa'Tel is that the Qa'Tel dumps the Qin's Lt. engineer for a Lt. Commander Universal slot. This means that you have to use an engineer in that slot in order to avoid being a glass cannon. You could always substitute it with a science boff, but you would be severely diminishing your tankiness.

If you have access to the Duvqu' (t6 veteran ship), I would recommend going with it instead because it has both Lt. Commander and ensign universal slots plus a lt. commander engineer slot, which allows for more flexibility in creating different builds while ensuring you survive.

The Flight Deck Raptor is a "middle of the road" kind of Escort. It's not a 5/2 Escort like the Matha Raptor and Pilot ships but a regular 4/3 one. Maneuverability, speed is nothing out of the ordinary. Even the single hangar bay isn't any special. Personally, I don't care for single hangars because hangar units derive their strength from numbers, something 2 hangar bays do. Even with that, the Kosali Siege Destroyer has a hangar bay.

There are 2 good notes about the Flight Deck Raptor.

    1. It has a very flexible BOFF layout. The LtCmdr Universal gives a great range of options, depending on your tastes. You can take the Universal and put it into any of the 3 (TAC, SCI, ENG) and still have at the very bare minimum, LtCmdr in all 3. You will not have a gaping hole in capability and critical BOFF skill coverage. I personally went with TAC because I can survive in any ship with LtCmdr or Lt+Ens ENG alone.

    2. If you have in your future plans being a more hardcore 2 hangar bay Carrier, the trait from the Flight Deck Raptor may be interesting:

"After achieving level 5 in the Heavy Escort Carrier [T6], Qa’Tel Flight Deck Raptor [T6] or Jhu’ael Tactical Carrier Warbird [T6] Starship Mastery you will unlock the Coordinated Assault starship trait. While this starship trait is slotted and you activate Beam: Overload I, II or III you will allow your pets to use Beam: Overload I.
Using Cannon: Rapid Fire I, II or III will allow your pets to use Cannon: Rapid Fire I.
NOTE: Your pets must have weapons that are compatible with these attack upgrades in order to benefit this starship trait."

Finally, if you're looking for the most high powered Escort you can get, look no further than the Pilot Ships. They have powerful blend of firepower, speed, maneuverability, pretty flexible BOFF layouts, and more importantly, Pilot Maneuvers. The only thing the Flight Deck Raptor has over them is superior BOFF layout flexibility. The Flight Deck Raptor's trait may have mixed value, depending on what direction of play and build style you want.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.

DPS isn't exactly at the top of the list for me, so I'm not to worried about that. I tend to prefer not so optimal set-ups, don't find it much fun to instantly melt stuff out of hand.

Right now, my Orion tac is flying the Mirror Qin Heavy Raptor... So, from an RP standpoint, I'm leaning towards it. On the mechanical side... I am liking the flexability of it, but I will have to check out some
    of these other ships mentioned.

On a side note though... With the T5 trait, how does it work with pets that already adilities such as BO1 or RF1?

I'm liking the Matha setup... however... those visuals.
I wonder if "Would you like a side of hull with your naceles" would fit for a ship name...

Your pets will still use them if they're within 10 km of your ship but to my understanding, if they already have the ability activated, nothing will happen when you activate your own BO or RF.

Ty... good to know. So basically, it just provides for an extra ability activation, while the other is on cooldown?

I think so, but don't quote me on it. Still, Coordinated Assault is fun to use and especially noticeable with BO firing from your shuttles. You won't break any DPS records with it but it's a fun little trait for anyone with a hangar bay.

    Again, many thanks.

I think, in the end, I will end up getting the Qa'Tel.
It may not be the "optimal" choice... but I'm way to maried to the Birok costume, and the others tend to leave me cold.

Regarding some hangar units that will make the most of the Coordinated Assault Trait, the subject came up a while back. I had a reply there with some units that can make more use of the trait than others.

My comment in there about the To'Duj Fighters was wrong and tom61sto corrected me:

Basic & Advanced To'Duj/Perigrine Fighters - The Elite version only comes with CRF1 but downgrades a Single Cannon to a Turret (Cryptic, why???). With that in mind, take the Advanced version with its superior armament with no TAC buffs and let it benefit from CRF.

Advanced version has a Pulse Cannon, not a Single Cannon. Since a Pulse Cannon fires only once per cycle, the Elite having a turret is a large upgrade, which would be made even better with CRF1. Since there doesn't seem to be a Pulse Cannon icon, I guess whoever edited the Wiki page just used Single Cannon icons instead.

Cryptic also fixed the trait a week or two after the Flight Deck Escorts came out so that Pulse Cannons benefit from it.

I have two friends who fly a Qa'tel. And having seen how they handle {with the right consoles} they have the potential to maneuver like a B.O.P and hit like a destroyer. Slap on some elite fighters to distract your target you can hit them out of nowhere.

I originally got the ship for the trait, but I kept it for the flexiblity.

Just purchased the ship last night. Reason was I have had so much fun with my Rom Tactical carriers. I think the Qa'tel is about halfway between an Ar'kala and a Ar'kif Retrofit. Both of which I have as well. I am not looking to be a DPS monster, though. Just want to get the job done efficiently. My Qa'tel is set up with the Kobali Space Set, Withering Disruptors, the Terran Weapon Set and of course Plasmonic Leech. I am already well aware this is not an optimal set up and there are tons of gear which performs much better. However, the Qa'tel is very fun to fly. One of these days when I can sit and play STO for twenty five hours a day I suppose I'll have what some people consider 'proper' gear for it.

I also have the MU Qin. I use the Birok skin on it and it has always been one of my favorite ships. This too was part of my decision to purchase the Qa'tel.
